History:

Lorna's parents are said to have died in a plane crash only weeks after she was born.  She was adopted by the Dane's, who are said to be her uncle and aunt.  She was never told of her true parents as it was thought this would traumatize her.  She did not learn the truth about her parents until she was nearly twenty years old.

Lorna was born with green hair, which her foster parents dyed brown, so she would not be thought of as different.  She also had the latent ability to manipulate magnetism, but due to a genetic anomaly, would not have been able to use these powers.  However, following the intervention of Samuel "Starr" Saxon, this was changed.

Saxon had constructed a robotic copy of Magneto, who was believed to be dead at the time, and a small army of androids with strange powers.  He planned to use this androids to accumulate wealth, while the world believed them to be mutants.  Saxon decided he needed some real mutants to lead this army, while he remained behind the scenes.  He recruited the hypnotic mutant Mesmero, and decided a mutant with magnetic powers would be very useful in controlling his robotic army.  He acquired a "psyche-generator" similar to the X-Men's Cerebro.  Mesmero used this machine to summon mutants with latent powers, the nearest of which was Lorna Dane.

She was captured and placed in a genetic stimulator, which altered her genetic make-up to allow her to access her magnetic powers.  While she was undergoing these changes, Mesmero brainwashed her to be sympathetic to the false Magneto's cause.  She became convinced that she was Magneto's daughter and had inherited her powers from him.

Mesmero dropped his mind control of Lorna, assuming she would follow her father under any circumstances.  However, when the X-Man Iceman revealed to Lorna her true parents origin and their plane crash, she joined the X-Men in battling Mesmero and Magneto.

Lorna did not wish to live a life as asuper hero, and discovered she had an interest in geophysics, and began doing doctoral research into the subject.  Spending most of her time out of the view of the public, Lorna no longer bothered to dye her hair.

Polaris seems to have a natural weakness against mental domination.

Later, she encountered her alleged sister, Zaladane, a sorceress from the prehistoric Savage Land.  Zaladance stole her mutant powers, which lead to Lorna developing alternative powers including superhuman strength and durability.  She also gained considerable height and mass during this period.

She eventually regained her magnetic powers, and returned to the United States, rejoining the X-Men.
