History: The mutant soldier known as Bishop was born in a dark and desolate world roughly 70 years into an alternate timeline of Earth's future where the mutant-hunting robots called the Sentinels had taken control of North America. In this timeline, Professor Charles Xavier and most of the members of the mutant team he founded, the X-Men, were killed by the Sentinels.
Mutants were killed or were imprisoned within mutant relocation camps. Bishop and his sister Shard were both born in one of these camps and like other mutants they were branded with "M" tattoos over their right eyes for identification. They were raised by their grandmother, who was herself a mutant, until she died. She told them stories about the heroism of the X-Men and instructed them to follow Xavier's dream of peace between mutants and the rest of humanity.
Following the abolition of mutant slavery, the heirs to the legacy of the X-Men established the peacekeeping organization known as Xavier's Security Enforcers -- a police keeping force adherent to Professor Charles Xavier's dream for peaceful coexistence between Homo sapiens and Homo superior. Bishop became a member of the XSE and came to our era, along with his lieutenants Malcolm and Randall, while in pursuit of the time-manipulating mutant criminal Trevor Fitzroy. Bishop's troops were slain, and he was badly injured, during the deadly clash that ensued. Only through the X-Men's intervention did Bishop survive.
Stranded in the past and finally coming to terms with his time-tossed condition, Bishop was honored when Professor Xavier invited him to join the team whose members he had idolized since childhood. Bishop found new purpose with the X-Men, standing with the outlaw adventurers in defense of a world inching toward the brink of genetic war. Initially uneasy with Bishop's presence, the X-Men soon came to realize he was a devoted disciple of Xavier's philosophy. |
