October 9, 2003: Hot bites
Fishing has been good in most places with this cooler weather, it's bringing the larger fish out. Salmon are running upriver, but please check the regulations before you go because some parts will be closed or you can fish it, but can't take fish.
September 28, 2003: Update for many areas
Ok, since I haven't updated for a while. I thought I do it in one shot. Striper action at Oneill and Delta has started to pick up. The cooler weather will bring the big fish back to the shallows. This is also true with largemouth bass in local lakes around here. The temperature at night has dropped and now the bass are moving into the shallow to get fat. I've caught some nice bass at Anderson, Calero, Coyote, and Steven's Creek. All on topwater lures like poppers, zara spook, and frogs. Rockcod fishing today out of HMB. Caught some nice rockcod and caught 5 lings. But limit on lings is only two. One huge one. 38inches long running at 20lbs. Salmon is very slow, but there are a few out there. Tuna fishing is still good if you can take the ride out there. Salmon has started to run upstream. Did I miss anything... Anderson Ramp is or will be closed. Coyote is closed during the weekdays for road repair. Get out there and fish because right now it's a good time. Temperature is just right and the fish are feeding.
August 16, 2003: Oneill Forebay
Tons of tiny stripers all over the place, but there are big ones in there because we hooked into some. Just gotta throw the right color, retrieve at the right speeds, etc.
June 8, 2003: Coyote Res
Trout fishing is excellent at both ends. Blue gill fishing is good also. Bass fishing is ok. Some bedded large females, but hard to catch. Topwater frog bite is also good.
May 30 & 31, 2003: Steven's Creek and Lexington
Trout fishing at both of these reservoirs are still hot.
May 23, 2003: California Delta
Topwater bass fishing is HOT, but so is the weather. Be careful out there especially this weekend because there will be many recreational boaters out there. Just have fun and be cool to everyone.
May 17, 2003: Lexington
Fishing for trout is still very productive.
May 11, 2003: Lexington
Trout fishing is on fire at Lexington.
May 10, 2003: Steven's Creek
Trout fishing was nice in the morning, until it got windy. But still ok. Everyone caught fish. This little girl, about 5 yrs old, caught one too. It's nice to see the father taking the little daughter out. She can cast and retrieve really good. Water is really high, so it's not possible to walk to the trail via the dam side. You may walk all the way around if you're up for that. Speaking to others, they say the perc ponds are good too. Oh, another thing about SC, the water is warming up and the algae growth is starting.
May 9, 2003: Pacific Ocean
The salmon bite is up North. Slow down near Monterey Bay.
April 18&19, 2003: Steven's Creek Reservoir
The trout are biting, but it's not really hot yet. Some people are catching fish and others are skunking out. Both lures and dough baits like Crave Bait and Power Bait are working.
April 13, 2003: Anderson Reservoir
The weather looked okay today so my buddy and I were able to make it out for a few hours on the water. Some others didn't let the nice afternoon go to waste and decided to fish also. Caught two small ones and that's about it. Maybe because we didn't really concentrate on fishing today. The water is actually not muddy for this huge storm, unless you're fishing past the bridge or near larger creeks.
March 30, 2003: Anderson Reservoir
The water is actually pretty nice. Many float tubers and shore anglers the waters. But fish early morning or evening for best results. This heat really beats down on ya and make sure you wear plently of sun block and cover up. Use nightcrawlers, plastic worms, cranks, spinners, they are bitting on almost anything.
March 22, 2003: Forebay
The water clarity is nice in most parts of the lake. If you want to get bombed by Swallows, fish near the 152 bridge. hehe Anyway, the nice weather makes fishing good once you find the school of fish. Mostly 16 inchers and not even legal size to keep. Too bad some people shore anglers are taking them. Anyway, once you find them, they will bit on almost anything, at least today.
March 9, 2003: Steven's Creek Reservoir
We received our first stocking this week. Some people on Sunday caught limits, but they were there the entire day. But hey, it's fun. The water is nice and so is the weather. A few more stocks and it will be great.
March 8, 2003: Oneill Forebay
Still slow. Fish caught are quite deep in some area, around 30 ft. The inlet is still muddy.
February 23, 2003: Lexington
It's nice to see Lexington filled again. 62percent of capacity. Many recreational kayakers and canoers, but only a few people fishing from shore. I am sure the less than 10 percent capacity really hurt this reservoir. The fish couldn't spawn. So now there aren't that many fish in there. Sucks.
January 25, 2003: San Luis Reservoir
Foggy and slow. There was a striper derby there today. It was cold and foggy, but not that windy. There were tons of boats on the water today. Marked many fish about 25, but not many bites. Some good sized fish are caught trolling jumbo minnows.
January 4, 2003: Oneill Forebay
Muddy! They are pumping in water. Marking fish, but hardly any bites. If you go, troll deep or use LOUD lures. Topwater is off during most of the day.
November 24, 2002: Pacifica/Half Moon Bay
It's amazing. I guess everyone reads their local newspaper because today at Pacifica there are TONS of people crabbing for Dungeness there. I am used to see hundreds of people lined up next to each other salmon fishing, but crab net ropes hanging off the pier one after another. Damn, was it crowded there on the pier. I didn't even bother fishing or crabbing. I went down to Pillar Point where the commercial crabbing folks were selling the crabs they couldn't unload. It went for 3.50 per pound. All live crabs. There were many people there buying fresh live crabs which is nice. It provides a nice yummy meal. I suggest people eat them fresh. Dead crabs are nasty.
November 23, 2002: Delta
Stripers are moving in, but mostly schoolie size.
November 3, 2002: Uvas
Not much activity. Caught two bass. Very healthy looking.
October 26, 2002: Feather River
Tons of salmon running up-stream. Poachers are snagging salmon there. That's just wrong. Steelhead. Not that active today. I only saw one person catch one all day.
September 21, 2002: Anderson
The water is so low, it's sad. But it's good that they are repairing the launch ramp. I fished there today with some friends and managed to catch a few. Nothing big though. There are tons of CARP in there. Many shore anglers are catching many carp and they are good size. If you like to fish for carp, this is the place to be.
September 20, 2002: Steven's Creek
Crappie Crappie Crappie... they are there and in good numbers.
August 10, 2002: O'Neill Forebay
Oh boy. Was it hot out there or what. Fishing in weather like this can be harsh on our bodies. But as hardcore anglers we still will go out and fish. We arrived at O'Neill today around 1pm and fished until 7pm. Caught many small sized fish, but nothing huge. The weed growth is... let's just say it's going wild. Fishing at first was tough. I landed a small dink, about 14 iinches, once we got there, but then we didn't find any schools for a while. Find the school and you will catch them easily. If not, you might get lucky with the ones that like to hide out by themselves around the weeds. And remember, carry a lot of fluids with you and drink them. You do not want to get dehydrated. Ahhh, being on the water again feels good after a long vacation.
June 15, 2002: O'Neill Forebay
I didn't get a chance to fish this weekend due to home improvement work, but my friends did. Here's the report for O'Neill Forebay for this weekend. Fishing was tough, not because of the wind... it was actually not windy at all which made fishing bad. You really have to roam around finding that school of fish. Also the fly hatches are at it's peak and it will annoy the heck out of you. Well, once you find the schools, it's good fishing. No keepers were caught. All tiny fish around 10-16 inches.
June 9, 2002: Steven's Creek Reservoir
The high winds didn't stop people from fishing here this weekend. Everyone was catching fish, but not many people caught limits. Friday was a better day and over the weekend it slowed down a bit. I hooked a trout this Sunday and was pulling it in. It felt weird at first by the action of the trout. It was not fighting like it usually does. So when I got the fish in visual range I saw this HUGE bass chasing it around. I pulled the trout right infront of me and saw the bass close-up. It was definitely over 4 pounds. Too bad I didn't have my bass gear with me. I just fished for 2 hours and then took off. Outback Adventures started to rent kayaks there. So if you're interested you can rent one and fish off of it.
June 2, 2002: Lexington Reservoir
I am so glad to see this reservoir has more water than before. It's still sad, the water is low, but better than before. Crappie fishing is good and there are tons of people there from shore fishing for them. Bass are hitting, but the bit is not hot. The ones I caught were from 8 inches to 4 pounds. The wind picked up and I left.
May 25, 2002: Memorial Day weekend at Kings Canyon National Park
Trout fishing in Kings Canyon is tough, but fun. Stalked some browns there, but all pretty small. You can find big ones there if you look hard. Well, Kings Canyon isn't the best place to trout fish if you're just going fishing. The Eastern Sierras is a better choice.
May 18, 2002: Steven's Creek Reservoir
Trout fishing here has gotten better. All the algae growth has died(finally). Anglers using power bait and lures are catching fish mostly in the mornings. The afternoon bite is much slower. So I advice you to fish there in the morning. But this rain might turn it around. We will see. Bass are being caught in the back of the creek but nothing big. Use plastics and spinnerbaits.
May 12, 2002: Coyote Reservoir
The bass bite wasn't on at all today. But the trout bite was on fire. There are also a lot of trout surfacing. Fish from shore or from a boat, you will catch something.
May 4, 2002: O'Neill Forebay
The morning was way too windy to fish, but the rest of the afternoon was so calm. Then around 4pm the wind picked up again. It was hard to stay in one place. When the water was dead calm, fishing was horrible. You can see the bottom easily. Today is a day where you have to chase and find the schools of fish. Where have all the big fish gone? No one caught any keepers. They were all small sized fish. Use whatever you like, just find the schools of fish.
April 24, 2002: O'Neill Forebay
Can you say windy? It was really windy out there today. Fishing was okay. I caught several and lost a 10 plus pounder. All small fish. None keepers. Limit is now 2 fish at 18 inches! Use ripbaits of your favorite color.
April 20, 2002: Anderson Reservoir
Well, the water is really low right now at Anderson. The bridge end you can only go a little past that rock that sticks out of the water. You can see that entire rock now. Aside from that... today was quite amazing. There were 100+ carp all over the bridge end. They were surfacing, jumping, and... ya know. hehe... I tried to hook one, but couldn't. Ok, now bass fishing. It was a slow day. The cold weather and rain must have moved them elsewhere. There are bass caught, but not many and it's slow. It's definitely not a spinnerbait day. Everyone who caught one threw plastics and worked it slowly on the bottom. Crappie fishermen had a tough time. They killed a few bass too, that really sucks. So aside from a huge school of carp, nothing else was happening. I caught one trolling a crankbait, but fell off. It was quite windy and cold in the morning, but it warmed up fast when the sun came out. Oh, there are tons of boaters out there... (recreational boaters... I don't complain about fishing boats.)
April 14, 2002: Oneill Forebay
Another nice warm day out, but the winds were blowing like crazy. The fishing was okay in the early morning when the winds were low and then all of the sudden the winds died down. That's when my partner caught his Striper. Then the winds picked up and we were blown off the waters. Didn't see anyone else catch anything, except for a poucher on the shore who took an undersized Striper. I wish I had the number to the park ranger so I can report them. Oh well...
April 13, 2002: Anderson Lake/Reservoir
The water temperature is now 69F! The fish are biting quite well, that is before the 86 degrees moved in. Then the fish took cover away from the heat. Then the bite came back in the evening. Use Hula Grubs, Lizards, and Spinnerbaits. A few on cranks. Dropshot can be good too. The water level is incredibly low. Man, we need more water!
March 30, 2002: Anderson Lake/Reservoir
What a nice weekend! The weather was so nice, too bad fishing wasn't as good as I or anyone else on that part of the lake thought. People were catching fish, but most of them were dinks or 12 to 13 inchers. Where are the hogs? The water temp. is now 59F!!! Yeah! Soon ya know what's gonna happen when as the weather gets warmer. So get ready! The fish are moving back in. One thing to note though, the bridge side of Anderson is SO low, maybe it will dry out this summer. It's almost already dried up in the end, if you can call it the end.
March 18-20, 2002: Steven's Creek Lake/Reservoir
Okay, DFG stocked about 2000 pounds of trout last Wed. Fishing was good all the way up until Monday. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday the fish totally stopped biting. No one caught anything except the people trolling. Hmm... so what happened? This weird weather partner? They only stocked 100? No one knows for sure. This week's scheduled stocking probably didn't take place either because of the road work that's been going on. We will see. Good luck. Oh, two more things, this year it seems like there's way more algae growth in this reservoir, and on Tues. and Wed. I didn't see any fish activities on the water surface.
March 16, 2002: Steven's Creek Lake/Reservoir
The cold and wind didn't stop many people from coming out to fish this week after they stocked this reservoir. Many people caught limit using lures and powerbait of various colors. People caught fish everywhere around this place. How did I do? Of course I caught my limit and more.
March 9, 2002: Anderson Lake/Reservoir
The rain moved in during mid-week... The cold front comes through... How did that affect the fishing? I was crazy enough to go out today on my float tube and almost froze my toes off, again. I was there for 4 hours total, fished for one hour without any bites. Went on shore for more than 2 hours to try to warm up, then got back onto the water to head back to the car. Caught nothing. But boaters were able to catch fish all over the place. Oh, the water is 55F, visibility wasn't good because of the rain, and the air temperature when I arrived there was only 36F.
March 2, 2002: Anderson Lake/Reservoir
Ok, it's time! Get your butt out and fish! Some of the fish seem to be in pre-spawn stage already. They are fat, feeding, and moving to the shallow ends. I caught 3 today within the first three hours, then I just messed around and didn't really fished anymore. Some people report 12+ fish in the morning and stuff. Nothing big tough. All small. The 3 I caught were all 14 inches, 1.5#. Almost all identical looking. The water temp. is still around 58F, but there are some warm pockets in the water where I found myself sitting already because I went float tubing today. All right, have fun all! Where shall I go fishing next... Hmm...
February 24, 2002: Anderson Lake/Reservoir
The weather is perfect for fishing. The weather has warmed up in the North end and fishing is great. Use plastics, spinnerbaits, and dropshot in deeper water. We caught many fish this weekend everywhere on the lake. It was really windy though, so everyone is hiding/fishing in the coves.
February 22, 2002: Campbell Perc Ponds
Stopped by the Perc ponds and see if the trout are biting after work on a Friday. They stocked it on Wed. I saw many people there fishing, so I thought it would be good. BUT it seems like no one was catching anything. I didn't see anyone with fish the entire time I was there. And that evening the winds were blowing like there's no tomorrow.
January 13, 2002: Anderson Reservoir
Decided to come out again with my friend. It was quite nice at the lake today. It was really foggy elsewhere except at the lake. Fishing picked up a little and I really enjoyed being out there today. I caught a 1.8# and my friend caught a 2.5#. Talked to someone there that caught 8 fish up to 1.5 pounds using blades and flipping jigs. It got a little crowded in the shallows today, so we left. Photos.
January 12, 2002: Anderson Reservoir
The year 2002 has started and I have not fished yet until this day. Other hobbies and the rain delayed my fishing. I float tubed in the shallow end with my 3.5mm Hodgman waders. Oh man, it was cooooold. I had to walk around on shore for like an hour to get some feeling back on my feet. It was a slow day for me maybe because I was always on the move trying to stay warm, but I managed to land a 1.5 pounder near the rock with a VPR Pro LBM spinnerbait. The fish didn't hit the lure that hard and I barely hooked it. Water temperate is 52F. Photos.
November 22, 2001: Lexington Reservoir
What a Thanksgiving! The clouds moved away a little and no rain. It was a nice day to fish. Launched from the boat ramp and worked my way to the end. The end is now the end of the water since the water level is only at 9.4% of capacity. I didn't get any hits until I took a long break and walked around taking pictures. Finally I landed a nice fish, 3 pounder. Then a little after I landed a 3.25 pounder. The 3.25# fought pretty hard. It darted away from me a few times and I thought I hooked a huge trout or something. Then I headed back towards the boat ramp. What a pain to kick all the way back!!!! Fished from 10:30AM to 3:30PM. Check out the photos.
November 18, 2001: Frog Lake
I went on a day hike today with my friends and our destination was this lake called Frog Lake. Our goal was just hiking, but since there was a lake there, why not bring our fishing gear. hehe... Well, go take a look at the pictures I took of Frog Lake and you will know why I didn't catch anything there. It was a beautiful day for a day hike though.
November 17, 2001: Anderson Reservoir
Ah! It was nice to get out again after not fishing for a few weeks now. Anderson was my target spot since Coyote and other ones seems to be closed or the water is just too low to fish(not that I have any problems with that because I float tube). Arrived at 6:30AM and left around 1PM. Caught 3 fish and got hits also. Caught a 1.5 pounder, 10 incher, and 2.5 pounder on my usual bait of choice, the white spinnerbait. What temperature must be cold because it definitely felt cold sitting in the water. Air temperature in the morning was around 53F and foggy. Then around 9AM the skies cleared up. Okay, I will start posting my fishing pictures. Check out the three fish I caught today in the photos page.
October 21, 2001: Coyote Reservoir
Fished Coyote this weekend. Arrive at 6:45AM and left around 1PM. Launched at the ramp and headed towards the South end. Hooked a dink near the weed patches, but jumped and got off. Then I hooked a BIG fish, fought it through the weeds, it jumped out of the water and dived straight down into the weeds again, and then I noticed I was fighting a losing battle. It took the drag and ran all around the thick weed bed and that was it! I only had an eight pound line on. Damn, that could have been my big fish of the year! The year is not over yet, I will be back! Between 9-10AM, my buddy and I hooked other dinks on crankbaits(Speed Trap and Norman). It was foggy, cold, and windy there this morning. The air temperature was around mid-50s and the water temperature was 64F. The weeds are definitely dying down. Fish on!
October 6, 2001: Anderson Reservoir
Ahh... the fish are coming back! The water temperature is now 68F and dropping, but so is the water level. Caught a 1# this morning on a white spinnerbait. Other people are catching fish around that size and up to 3#.
