Madelyne's Profile |
Real Name: Madelyne Pryor Height: 5'6 Weight: 110 lbs. Eyes: green Hair: Red Affiliations: Hellfire Club NY Aliases: Goblin Queen Powers and History: Originally, Madelyne was a powerless clone of Jean |
Grey, but she gained power, physical and magical, before and during Inferno . While she died during that confrontation, she was resurrected by Nate Grey upon his arrival on our Earth, and is now a high level telekinetic and telepath, and possibly more. Grown by Sinister , Madelyne was created for the express purpose of bearing Cyclops' child. Her body was still in Sinister's incubation chamber when the Phoenix died on the moon, but she had no consciousness. When the Phoenix's essence returned to Earth, it was rejected by Jean, but when it found Madelyne, who possessed an identical genetic structure, it left its memories with her. Madelyne awoke screaming "Scott!" at almost the exact same moment the Phoenix died. She was trained as a pilot and placed in Scott Summers' grandparents' airline rotation, so that when Scott, his brother Alex , and their father Chris came to Alaska to see their family, Madelyne was the pilot of their plane. |
Scott, still grieving for his lost love, immediately was intrigued by her "double," and even thought that Phoenix might have resurrected herself, as she had apparently done before. Support for these feelings came when Madelyne mentioned that she was once the sole survivor of a plane crash that had occurred on the exact same day that Jean had died. (Of course, this was an implanted memory, fabricated to explain the memory of death and fire that she had received from the Phoenix, and not an actual event.) Scott and Madelyne fell in love, and despite the best efforts of Mastermind to convince the X-Men that Madelyne was Dark Phoenix, Scott and her were married shortly thereafter. |
Scott and Madelyne stayed with his grandparents in Alaska, and were flying a passenger/cargo plane when Loki's Firefountain erupted and changed all of the humans aboard into superpowered beings. Madelyne became the healer Anodyne, and revealed that she was pregnant with a boy. After the Firefountain was extinguished, Madelyne returned to normal, and gave birth a few months later. However, the tension between Scott and Madelyne was building, and they left to Alaska after their son Nathan's birth. Scott soon left for NY, and founded X-Factor upon the real Jean Grey's return. Madelyne left Alaska on a flight carrying cargo for the company, which had been bought out by a disguised Sinister, and was hunted down by the Marauders , Sinister's agents. They wanted her child, the powerful mutant for whom their master had waited over 150 years. |
Maddie found and hooked up with the X-Men, and was one of their number when they sacrificed their lives to help Forge defeat the Adversary . Madelyne, along with the X-Men, was resurrected by Roma, and chose to live in the Australian Outback with them, where Maddie became the team's computer expert. When she was captured and brought to Genosha , Madelyne was subjected to a deep telepathic scan. The backlash killed the telepath, and seemed to have activated latent power within her. Unfortunately, Madelyne was corrupted by a demon named N'astrih , and became the Goblin Queen, a being of great magical power. Along the way she also started a kinky affair with her brother-in-law Havok. In defiance of her creator, Sinister, the Goblin Queen planned to sacrifice her son in order to open a dimensional portal that would transform Earth into a demon planet. The X-Men and X-Factor fought her and she killed herself when she tried to take out the teams. The Phoenix essence that had motivated her then re-appeared, leaving Jean with her memories. Madelyne was not seen again until Nate Grey appeared on our Earth, and reached out with his power for Jean, his "mother" in his birth dimension. Instead, he found a psychic echo of Madelyne, and somehow recreated her. They stayed together a short time, but then Maddie was recruited by Selene to be the Black Rook of the Hellfire Club . She also became Sebastian Shaw's consort. |
By this time Madelyne had a range of psychic powers, but she really increased her abilities when she again encountered Nate, and drained him of almost all his powers. She also gained the ability to teleport, in addition to her other abilities. Maddie also "killed" Threnody prior to her confrontation with Nate. She has hinted at a physical connection with Nate, which makes it appear that they are sharing life-energy and power to exist. She joined up with Nate again in Europe and when Stryfe took over Latveria, she deceived him into believing that she had joined him. Instead, she waited until Stryfe shared some of his power with her, and then she psionically recharged Nate, allowing him and Cable to defeat the madman. Maddie stayed with Nate for a while, and came into conflict with Ness , who was looking to mentor Nate following the incident with Stryfe. However, when Nate was finally tracked down by the Psi-Ops Gauntlet, a team of armored telepaths, Maddie again used her power to recharge a drained Nate, but then ended up looking years older. |
In the final conflict, one of the telepaths detonated a bomb, and it appeared that Madelyne was caught in the explosion. Her second "death" seems to have been confirmed by her intrusion into Cable's and Cyclops' mind while they were captured by Apocalypse . She offered Cable a chance to escape with her to another plane, but when he refused and asked her to help them instead, she said she couldn't, because she was just an echo on the astral plane. Recently it was revealed that the Maddie Nate created was replaced months ago by her doppelganger from another reality. In that world, Maddie was Queen, and for some reason needed Nate Grey's power to accomplish a task, so she replaced our Maddie and started controlling Nate in his sleep, making him use his power in destructive ways until he figured it out and she took him to her dimension. What exactly happened to our Earth's Madelyne is unknown, but that conversation with Cable would indicate she is again dead. |
