| Morrigan was a few feet from her room when she felt it. She could not see him in the minds eye anymore. Panic set in. She jumped back in her car and drove back to the coffee shop. She thought of Michael, and the way she could not save him. Those helpless feelings like young parents have as they watch rescue workers try to save a child from a well. They would gladly stretch themselves to impossible lengths to be a lifeline if they could, ignoring the danger to themselves. This is the time when she lost her confidence. When she felt weak, helpless. This is the time when she did not want this 'gift'. Dear God, it is a gift! And she loved doing this. In this world where there is so much hate and mistrust, where there is deceit and ulterior motives and death... How wonderful it felt, to bring someone back from that edge; to be a whole person again! To blossom... To be that person that they so much desired and deserved to be.... It is a gift... But when you are helpless to do anything, even the best gift felt like a curse, with a thought that it had something to do with the misfortune. At last. She could see the crowd that was slowly growing, and the police between them. Morrigan watched the EMTs work on me. I was put on a stretcher with the tie down across the forehead; the process of restricted movement of further injury during transport. Thank God, he's not dead, she thought. But emotions were too overwhelming... No. You need to be strong. Find out where he is going. The flight for life landed, he was boarded and taken away. "Please, tell me where he's going!" She told an EMT, "That's my brother!" Tears flowed now. "They're taking him to Loma Linda Medical Center ER." Follow the feeling. Search him out...Fifteen minutes and she was there. She asked the receptionist. There's the ER... "I'm sorry, you can't go in there! Please wait till they stabilize him!" "Look, I am his" Think girl, "-girlfriend! Please tell me he's going-" "We need to be patient, alright? Let the doctors do what they need to do." Poor nurse, the amount of times she has had to do this. This was the hard part. "I'm sure he's going to be alright. I'll have the doctor come talk to you after he finds out his condition." "I can give you all the information you need. Okay? Just give me the forms." Hell yes I can. I do my homework. She filled out the forms; every answer correct down to my blood type-which, by the way, I did not know. She had every piece of info on me, all my allergies, my junior high school records from my school counselor, when my sister was admitted into the hospital for an overdose on some pain relievers. Even the military records from when I was born a blue baby, one month premature and on my deathbed. That was until a priest named Father Divine gave me my last rites. He was also my emergency Godfather, since nobody else was available. The next two days, I had fully recovered-to the shock and surprise of my doctors, and my parents. Divine? Yes, that's what my Godfather's name was. She called my dad and told him what happened and where I was. "Who is this?" "I'm Morrigan, his friend. Or at least trying to be. Please get here right away. I don't know any details yet. They haven't told me anything." An ER tech came out as she hung up, and told her my condition. A fractured arm and leg, lacerations throughout my body and face, but what they were concerned with was I has an Epidural Hematoma on the right side of my skull. After a head injury like mine, blood seeps into the surrounding tissue, and as the pressure increases on the brain, the more chance of brain damage and eventually death. I was prepped for surgery to take that pressure off my brain. There is also a big chance that I could slip into a coma. She had to leave. This was way too much. Why him? Guilt attached itself to her, right at the hip. She thought about fate. What if she didn't go there to drop off the pens? Would he have left earlier or later? Can't think like this. Bitch. Because of her. He wouldn't have been so stand offish like he was, so defensive. That stupid bitch made him like this. I can see why he is like this, hell, I would be too. My job would have been so easy; wrap him up, spin him and let him go. Now I'll be lucky if he can hold a pen. Darkness. Pain. Timelessness. Floating in a sea of pain and darkness. Oh God, the pain. All around. Then it goes. And comes back. Like the tide. No. The pain...The world was there in so many layers, the grip of life was enough. So much I haven't done, now everything is lost. IloveyouI loveyou I love you I love you please don't go...no it hurts...No more pain...It hurts! Ow. Stop. Please stop it hurts! Please please please... hurts... Morrigan woke up early the next morning and went back to the hospital. Bad news. He did slip into a coma last night. But his condition has stabilized; they released the pressure off the brain. It was okay to go in and see him, but he was unresponsive. Hell, I knew that when I first met him. Not the best time for jokes, but he would have laughed. He didn't mind a little sarcastic joke to lighten the load. The nurse was changing some of his dressings as she entered. "Jarod..." She could not help it anymore. Sobs filled the room. The nurse stood quiet for a moment, then announced to Morrigan; "I'll leave you two alone" "Please don't." She stretched out her arms; "I could really use a hug." Can't turn that down. She complied, and let Morrigan weep on her shoulder for a good couple of minutes. "I'm sorry-" "It's okay. Shh. He can pull through this." "No not that. I leaked some mascara on your shoulder..." She was there. She was alone with me. What she wanted from the beginning. But not in this fashion. She sat down and held my hand for a long time. The crying was simple now. <---Previous Next---> |
