Let us first set the stage for Lazarus and the rich man, go back a few verses before the start of this parable. |
|
Notice Immanuel is talking to the Pharisees just before he begins the parable on Lazarus and the rich man, because they sneered him about the last parable he had spoken about. |
Luke 16:14-16 |
14: |
And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. |
15: |
And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but Yahweh knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of Yahweh. |
|
16: |
The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of Yahweh is preached, and every man presseth into it. |
Now let's go to the parable. We will take it one or two verses at a time to explain each verse as we go: |
Luke 16:19 |
19: |
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linens, and fared sumptuously every day: |
|
The rich man being the Pharisee. This next verse Immanuel is talking about how high the Scribes and Pharisees live. |
Matthew 23:4-7 |
4: |
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. |
5: |
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders of their garments. |
|
6: |
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, |
|
7: |
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. |
Now to the next verse of the parable: |
Luke 16:20 |
20: |
And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores. |
|
The beggar Lazarus being a Israelite that believed in the Messiah and his teachings. |
Now to the next verse of the parable: |
Luke 16:21 |
21: |
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich mans' table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. |
|
The crumbs being the prophecies on the Messiah, whom the Pharisees rejected because they still went by the law of Moses. But the believing Israelite was willing to accept what was rejected by the other Israelites, and to be fed with these crumbs, for in them were eternal life. |
|
Compare Luke 16:21 (above) with Matt. 15:26-27 (below), and notice that Lazarus the believing Israelite was having his wounds licked by a dog. The dog being the Gentiles, even though salvation was not to them yet. The dog was licking Lazarus's wounds, because it wanted what he was getting, the crumbs. But as a believing Israelite, Lazarus was treated like a dog, a Gentile, by the Israelites who did not believe in the Messiah. |
The following scriptures on the Canaanite woman which was a Gentile, shows better the meaning of the above scripture: |
Matthew 15:23-28 |
23: |
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. |
24: |
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. |
|
25: |
Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Master, help me. |
|
26: |
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. |
|
27: |
And she said, Truth, Master: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. |
|
28: |
Then Immanuel answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. |
|
This woman was willing to except the crumbs. She also knew there was life in them. |
Now to the next few verses of the parable. |
|
Many teach that this is not a parable but that it actually happened. The ones that do, don't understand the resurrections or judgment and when the lake of fire actually takes place. |
Luke 16:22-24 |
22: |
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died and was buried; |
23: |
And in the lake of fire he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. |
|
24: |
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. |
|
NOTE: If someone was in the Lake of Fire, they would need more than a tip of a finger for water; and no one would be holding a conversation if they were burning up. |
|
These verses show the last state of these two. Lazarus went to Abraham's bosom. We'll show why it's called Abraham's bosom in the next verses. |
Gal. 3:7, 28 & 29 |
7: |
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. |
28: |
There is neither Israelite nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in the Messiah Yahweh. |
|
29: |
And if ye be the Messiah's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. |
|
The rich man went to the lake of fire. Why? |
Matt. 23:15-33 |
15: |
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of the lake of fire than yourselves. |
16: |
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! |
|
17: |
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? |
|
18: |
And, Whosoever shall swear by the table, it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. |
|
19: |
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the table that sanctifieth the gift? |
|
20: |
Whoso therefore shall swear by the table, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. |
|
21: |
And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. |
|
22: |
And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of Yahweh, and by him that sitteth thereon. |
|
23: |
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and a faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. |
|
24: |
Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. |
|
25: |
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. |
|
26: |
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. |
|
27: |
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. |
|
28: |
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. |
|
29: |
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous. |
|
30: |
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. |
|
31: |
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. |
|
32: |
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. |
|
33: |
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of the lake of fire? |
|
Why did the rich man call Abraham father? |
John 8:52-53 |
52: |
Then said the Israelites unto him, Now know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. |
53: |
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? |
|
This shows Abraham was dead; so again, this proves to be a parable. |
|
The rich man was a Israelite. This parable strongly implies that the Messiah was talking only to the Israelite and the outcome of the believing and nonbelieving. |
Now let's go to the next verse of the parable: |
Luke 16:25 |
25: |
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. |
|
We already know why the rich man received the good things from the first verse of this parable. Now let's find out why Lazarus received the evil things. |
2 Timothy 3:12 |
12: |
Yea, and all that will live righteously in the Messiah Yahweh shall suffer persecution. |
Acts 8:1-4 |
1: |
And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the assembly which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. |
2: |
And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. |
|
3: |
As for Saul, he made havoc of the called out ones, entering into every house, and hailing men and women committed them to prison. |
|
4: |
Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word. |
Now let's go to the next verse of the parable. This verse is self-explanatory: |
Luke 16:26 |
26: |
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. |
Now let's go to the next few verses of the parable: |
Luke 16:27-28 |
27: |
Then he said, I pray thee therefore; father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house (House of Israel): |
28: |
For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. |
|
Who are these 5 brethren the rich man spoke of? We'll find out in the following scriptures. Remember the one in the lake of fire was a Pharisee. |
Matt. 16:12 |
12: |
Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. |
Matt. 23:13 |
13: |
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. |
Matt. 26:2-4 |
2: |
Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. |
3: |
Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, |
|
4: |
And consulted that they might take Immanuel by subtilty, and kill him. |
Matt. 26:57-67 |
57: |
And they that had laid hold on Immanuel led him away to Caiaphas the high priest where the scribes and the elders were assembled. |
58: |
But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. |
|
59: |
Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Immanuel, to put him to death; |
|
60: |
But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses. |
|
61: |
And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of Yahweh, and to build it in three days. |
|
63: |
But Immanuel held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living Yahweh, that thou tell us whether thou be the Messiah, the Son of Yahweh. |
|
64: |
Immanuel saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. |
|
65: |
Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. |
|
66: |
What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. |
|
67: |
Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and other smote him with the palms of their hands, |
Matt. 27:1-2 |
1: |
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Immanuel to put him to death: |
2: |
And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. |
Luke 24:20 |
20: |
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. |
Mark 8:31 |
31: |
And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. |
Mark 14:1 |
1: |
After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. |
Acts 4:1-12 |
1: |
And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, |
2: |
Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Immanuel the resurrection from the dead. |
|
3: |
And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. |
|
4: |
Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. |
|
5: |
And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes. |
|
6: |
And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred |
|
7: |
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? |
|
8: |
Then Peter, filled with the Spirit said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, |
|
9: |
If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; |
|
10: |
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Yahweh Messiah of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom Yahweh raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. |
|
11: |
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. |
|
12: |
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. |
Acts 5:17-18 |
17: |
Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, |
18: |
And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. |
Acts 5:27-28 |
27: |
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, |
28: |
Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. |
|
Pharisee being the one in the Lake of Fire. |
Brothers are: |
||
1. |
Scribes |
|
2. |
Sadducees |
|
3. |
Chief Priests |
|
4. |
Elders |
|
5. |
High Priest |
|
After reading all these, you're probably wondering how are these his brethren? There are four reasons why and they are: |
1: |
They did not accept the prophecies of the coming Messiah. |
|
2: |
They were all responsible for the death of the Messiah. |
|
3: |
They persecuted the Israelites that believed in the Messiah. |
|
4: |
They all tried to stop the spread of the truth of the Messiah. |
Now let's go to the last verses of the parable: |
Luke 16:29-31 |
29: |
Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. |
30: |
And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. |
|
31: |
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. |
|
Abraham was telling the rich man that his brethren had the Old Covenant scriptures which was told by Moses and the prophets of the coming Messiah, and all had to be fulfilled which was prophesied about him. Though all the scriptures about him would be fulfilled, and even though he would rise from the dead, they still would not believe. |
Luke 24:15-27 |
15: |
And it came to pass, that while they communed together and reasoned, Immanuel himself drew near, and went with them. |
16: |
But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. |
|
17: |
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? |
|
18: |
And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? |
|
19: |
And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Immanuel of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before Yahweh and all the people: |
|
20: |
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. |
|
21: |
But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. |
|
22: |
Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre: |
|
23: |
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. |
|
24: |
And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. |
|
25: |
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: |
|
26: |
Ought not the Messiah to have suffered these things, and to enter into his esteem? |
|
27: |
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. |
Acts 26:22-23 |
22: |
Having therefore obtained help of Yahweh, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: |
23: |
That the Messiah should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. |
|
This is where Christians get their belief that when you die you go to heaven or the lake of fire, neither being true. This is proven by what death really is and what the New Earth is for. WATCH FOR THESE STUDIES. |
|
Lake of Fire is not until after Yahweh returns, so here again proves this is a parable. |
Matt. 25:41 |
41: |
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: |
THESE ARE SITES THAT PROVES NO ONE GOES TO HEAVEN: |
