Jackie Chan's Diary
Official Jackie Chan Site.

But when I got back to the hotel room, I received some very shocking news from Hong Kong. A very famous singer/actor in Hong Kong, and my good friend, Leslie Cheung, had committed suicide. I was so shocked when I heard this that I couldn't even speak because I remember just last month, I was having dinner with him, my manager Willie,
Maggie Cheung, and Karen Mok. We all sat at a long table and there were some decorations in the middle of the table. He sat near the middle and I sat at the end, so I didn't really have much of a chance to talk with him during dinner.

The bad thing about long tables is that it's really hard to have a conversation with other people sitting at the other end of the table. That's why I prefer round tables, because everyone can see each other and talk. But when I finished my food, I found out that Leslie had already left during the middle of the dinner. He was really quiet and no one seemed to have noticed that he had left. But afterwards, even Willie mentioned to me that he thought Leslie had been acting strange lately. Some people say that he had a curse put on him, but I don't really believe in that sort of thing.

Then Osumi told me about a famous actor in Japan who hung himself just a few days ago. His name was Masato Furuoya, and he was about the same age as Leslie.

I don't know why Leslie killed himself, but I don't' think that suicide is right. If he had the courage to kill himself, why he didn't have the courage to keep on living. I feel sympathy for him, and I feel that I've lost a good friend, but I don't feel pity for him because suicide is a selfish act. The news of Leslie's death may not affect the whole world, but it will be another blow to the people of Hong Kong. Right now, what the people of Hong Kong needs the most is something to motivate them and to give them hope, but instead, they only get more bad news.

All over the world, people die everyday. There are people who cherish life so much that they cannot let go when someone they love dies. But when you don't treasure your own life, and feel the need to take away the happiness that you give to the people you love, and the people who love you, I just don't understand it.

After hearing about Leslie's death, there was nothing I do for him anymore. The only thing I could do was to sleep, and rest myself well, and do my best to finish this movie and make it good, and just keep doing my work. At least I had the chance to see him, and eat dinner with him, one last time...
I slept until around 1:00am, and then they called me to the set to start shooting. The elephant was back, so I gave him a lot of fruits and vegetables to eat

I was finished with my shots around 5:00am, so I went back to the hotel and went to sleep.
