Rescue
Stories:

Peanut with Nico

 |
Pika was rescued 15 minutes before
he was scheduled to be put to sleep. When I rescued him
from the SPCA he had a broken leg, an eye that had been damaged
by a pair of scissors and an ear infection.
According to the my vet his leg was stomped on causing the bones to
actually crush not break. His eye was cut on the inside with a pair of scissors.
The only logical reason in my mind would be that someone thought he was full Shar
Pei and wanted to tack the eyes. The vet determined he was part Shar Pei/Jack Russell.
The day that
I rescued him I had planned to take him to the rescue where I
purchased my shar pei. That was three years ago and he's still
with us, my kids adore this little guy and he
has turned out to be the best dog. Pika's favorite past
time is to cuddle with you on the bed, a part of his body has to
be touching yours. The executive
director of the SPCA told me that day he was un-adoptable and would not make a good
pet. If I wanted him to take him and get him out of there
and promise to never bring him back.
I wonder how many dogs are deemed to be un-adoptable and
put to sleep without ever getting a chance to show how much love
they have to offer someone who is good to them?

Buddy the Amazon
and Peanut the Parakeet!
I read an ad on Free-cycle for a
Parakeet and I responded because I don't like to see birds
listed on these sites or any other animal for that matter.
I contacted the owners and offered to come get the bird with the
intentions of finding him a forever home. I couldn't keep
the parakeet because of the size of my birds and the risk of his
well being around my birds.
That same day the owners contacted me about an Amazon
they needed to find a home for. I was told the owner of the bird
was a elderly man who had become very ill. I knew I had
resources to find this bird a home so I agreed to take him.
Turns out it was the same home as the parakeet.
I went to pick the birds up the next day in Florence, Kentucky.
The Amazon Buddy was scared to death, I felt so sorry for him. But
the transition home was smooth. Once I got him at my
house, I put the entire cage in the shower. He closed his
eyes and sat there as though he had gone to heaven. He
smelled of cigarette smoke and the cage had dust covering it.
Buddy was the saddest bird I had ever met, I did everything
possible to get him to come out of the cage but he wouldn't.
Turns out he had never been out of his cage. After a few days he
started to chirp and make some noises, he was starting to feel
comfortable. He even was talking to talk and you could see he
was feeling more comfortable in his surroundings. I kept him in
a separate room from my birds, this is always the best thing
because of diseases and not knowing the bird and he was twice
the size of my macaw.
I found a wonderful Parrot Network group in the area that would take him in
and give him the medical care he needed. To make a long story short,
Buddy was diagnosed with liver cancer.
They changed his diet to all vegetables and fruits and started him on
medications. He was adopted by a family that owns two other
Amazons. He is doing fine and is living a good life.
I am so happy that I agreed to take him in and find him a home.
I know he would still be sitting in his cage getting sicker and
sicker had I not taken him that day! Say a prayer for Buddy, I
only wish him the best he deserves a good life now.
Peanut the Parakeet
Peanut was very easy to find a home for he lives happy with
another parakeet.
Since the rescue of these two birds I have taken in a beautiful
G2 her name is Angel (go figure). She has found her
forever home with us, she is very scared right now but she is
coming along fine.

~gone but not forgotten~ Mom and Uncle Bob,
October 12th, 1999
If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk
right up to heaven and bring you home again!

Mom and Uncle Bob
Pearl Johnting was my mother and
Uncle Bob was of course my Uncle. I think this story is a
really neat story of love, loyalty and family bonding. Mom
and Uncle Bob lost their Mother when Mom was 2 and Uncle Bob was
1. 6 Months later their Father died of a heart attack.
They had around 11 brothers and sisters total, all had to be
sent to foster homes. Mom and Uncle Bob were kept together
because they were the youngest in age.
All of their lives they stayed close to each other and each
helped one another out when needed. They lived close by
with only one city between them. When Uncle Bob got
sick with cancer Mom would go to his home and help take care of
him. But it wasn't much longer she too would get sick with
Breast Cancer. Uncle Bob fought a long battle of cancer
and in the end the cancer took his life away. About six
months before his death Mom could no longer come to see him nor
care for him. But the family told him that she wasn't
feeling well, because of his condition they didn't want him to
know she was dying with cancer too.
On October 12th Mom took her last breath and gave up and left
this world. That same day Uncle Bob said "I will be there
soon Pearl". It was only hours later that he to would pass
away. They died the same day and the funerals were held
together. Uncle Bob loved to laugh and have fun, Mom
adored Uncle Bob and thought the world of him. He to loved
his sister and wanted to protect her. I miss you Mom and Uncle
Bob.
Saving one pet
won't change
the world
but surely,
the world
will change
for that one pet.
