This is the temple at Kom Ombo, dedicated to Horus and Sobek (the crocodile god). They had a room with three mummified (3000 year old) crocs! Apparently the ancient Egyptians were tired of their farmers being hurt/eaten when the Nile flooded each year, so they opted to worship them to try to keep them satisfied. (bad idea, many dead Egyptians) So they built a little well area where the Nile came into during flood season. They made it just big enough for a baby crocodile. They'd feed the crocodile all during the season, and when the Nile receded and the croc tried to leave, it was too big...The Egyptians then would remove and mummify it.
A somewhat typical view of the Nile from our cruise. Lots of palm trees right by the river, with sand stretching behind that in desert plains or in mountains. This is either a villa or a mosque of some sort. (i.e. a building Josh thought looked cool) *grin*
Not the best quality picture, but indicative of a lot of the temples on the Nile. We were most impressed by the vivid colors at the top of the columns...intact because of cover from sun and blowing sand. We had to walk down a long flight of steps to reach this (Esna Temple). It was covered with sand for hundreds (thousands?) of years, and the town literally grew up right over it!
