Mark Knopfler and co..
The brain behind the group formed the Dire Straits in the UK in 1977 with him at the guitar and vocals, brother Dave Knopfler (guitar), John Illsey (bass) and Pick Withers (drums).
They burst on the music scene with (now classic) single Sultans of Swing , an affectionate rock song about a jazz band.It was a refreshing and surprising record with simple arrangement and cool, silky solos on Mark's Stratocaster..Their American sound still leads people that don't know, to believe that they are a U.S. band.
Dire Straits - their first album, released in 1978 went platinum in many countries, as did their next one Communique released later in the same year.
In their third album Making Movies keyboards are added to their sound (Roy Brittan). Love Over Gold released in 1982 went to the top of the US charts and stayed on the Top 100 for months. In this album Knopfler explored, with some pain, not only states of the heart, but state of the world, and the force of history. Following this album, the band are joined by drummer Terry Williams, and hit the road.
Mark Knopfler became one of the new guitar heroes, a breed which almost vanished in the first wash of the New Wave. At first a devoted user of Fender Stratocaster, he went on to using several custom-made Schechter guitars, with different pick-ups and tonal qualities, as well as a Japanese Strat copy - the Fernandez.
The group reappeared in 1985, making history with Brother in Arms, and then embarked on an exhaustive world tour.
Dire Straits were one of the most successful acts of the 80's. With Brothers in Arms going multi-platinum their status as a supergroup was confirmed on a global basis.

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms
