One of the greatest Blues guitarists of all time ..
A vast history in music, with band-hopping and solo acts throughout his career, Eric started out as early as 1963 (at age 18) by forming his first band, Roosters with Paul Jones (later Manfred Mann) and Brian Jones (R.Stones).His first big group though, were The Yardbirds with whom he recorded his first hit For Your Love. This sound though wasn't enough for him..He preferred a more purist environment, and joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. His guitar playing now attracted a huge number of followers, and positively effected other British players;he is already considered at this stage THE Guitar Hero..
Amongst many sitters-in to the Bluesbreakers, came bass player Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker, soon to both split with Eric and form one of the greatest Rock groups of all times - Cream..This was the very first Power Trio, and and important link in the development of heavy rock. However, they didn't last long.. In 1968 they split up, having left us though with masterpieces, such as White Room, The Sunshine of Your Love , Crossroads , and more..
The post-Cream era finds Clapton involved in various projects, including Blind Faith (a supergroup with no future), guesting on other artists' albums, and his first solo album in 1970.He then forms Derek and the Dominoes with an album (considered by many as his best recording effort) which included his Classic single Layla, a song dedicated to his wife-to-be Patti (then married to George Harrison..)
Clapton's increasing drug problem took him off the music scene for several years.. Eventually with the help of good friends (like Pete Townshend) he managed to regain his health, and get back to a now low-profile musical career, with occasional hit singles, and a Blues influence in his songs.
The pain from the premature loss of his young son, comes out in his loveliest song ever , Tears in Heaven...
