Frequently Asked
Questions
What is
Yoga?
- Yoga is a holistic
system that addresses mind, spirit and body .As a complete
science of life, Yoga originated in India many thousand years
ago and could today be described as the oldest system of
personal development in the world. Asanas or Yogic postures work
on every part of the body. They are stretching and toning
muscles, joints, the spine and the entire skeleton. Asanas also
work on your internal organs, glands and nerves. Due to the
release of physical and mental tension they set free vast
resources of energy.
- Pranayama or breathing exercises
revitalise the body and help to control the mind which in turn
can make you feel calm and refreshed. The practice of positive
thinking gives increased clarity, mental power and
concentration. You may initially get drawn to Yoga in order to
keep your body supple. Or you may be seeking help and relief for
a specific complaint like tension, backache or insomnia. If you
continue with regular practice you will become aware of a subtle
change in your approach to life and begin to glimpse a state of
inner peace, your true nature.
What should I know before attending a class?
To enjoy and feel
the benefits of yoga, there are a few common-sense points to be
remembered
- Wear loose, comfortable
clothing. Some people find pure cotton more comfortable than
nylon or lycra. Yoga is ideally practiced in bare feet, but
bring some warm socks to wear during relaxation.
- Never practice yoga with a full
stomach. Allow 2 hours to elapse after a light meal, more after
a heavy meal.
- Yoga is NON-COMPETITIVE. You
work within the limits of your own body. Never compare your
efforts in adopting a posture with that of other members of the
group. You should NEVER feel pain or discomfort in your
practice..
- There are certain postures which
should be avoided if you have certain medical conditions and
during menstruation. These will always be mentioned.
- Do ensure that you let your
teacher know if you have any medical problems or are pregnant.
If you are unsure about the advisability of practicing yoga
check with your doctor first.
Do
I need any special equipment?
- In some classes you will need to
bring a mat (yoga mat or camping mat) to lie on, and also have a
light blanket to cover yourself with during relaxation. If
possible also bring a small cushion or yoga block. In other
classes all equipment is provided
Why don't you give
details of the venues on the web site?
- To avoid
disappointment or over-full classes it is better that
prospective students check first that there is space. I can also
give advice on the most suitable class to attend. People with
special needs, or health problems are probably better catered
for in a small group class. Contact me by phone 0191 3867955 or
e-mail
for more details.
