The OSAT/Jimmy D Hinkhouse Memorial Library

THE LIBRARY IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Introduction

The estate of OSAT founder Jimmy Hinkhouse gave to the club Jim's extensive collection of mountaineering, running, and recovery books. The library constitutes the single largest physical asset of the club. The books are available for circulation among the club members, in accordance with policies approved by the BOTS.

How to Request and Check Out Library Materials

The library is currently stored at Librarian's home. Members may request books by phone, email, or written note to the Librarian. Browsing selections from the collection will be available at the monthly club meetings and at other OSAT events. The entire collection may be made available for browsing at the Librarian's home by prior arrangement.

Currently, Rik A is the Librarian, and the entire library collection is available for browsing from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on the second Wednesday of the month prior to the club meetings. Rik's home is just a few minutes from the church where the meeting takes place. Call Rik (425-234-1770 or 206-232-8908) or email him to get directions.

OSAT JDH Memorial Library Policies

Library Operating Policies are subject to review, revision, and approval by the OSAT BOTS. The library currently consists of books, magazines, and journals, but may be expanded to include videos, CD's and other research media. In the following policies, the terms "books" and "materials" encompass any resource media in the library.

Circulation
Books are due in by the end of the month following the month they are checked out. Library transactions (checkout, reserves, returns) can be handled at the monthly meeting, or by arrangement with the Librarian. The Librarian will endeavor to provide access to the entire library or portions of it for browsing and circulation transactions periodically, for example at monthly club meetings.

An individual may check out a maximum of two books and four magazines at any time.

Materials must be physically returned to the Librarian before being checked out to anyone else. Materials are not to be passed from one member to another - the member whose name is on the checkout card is responsible for its return to the Librarian. This policy is not only intended to help maintain the integrity of the collection and develop accurate circulation data, but also assures fairness to members who have reserves on books.

Renewals
One renewal for one additional month will be granted unless a reserve request for the book has been received. Renewals may be made by phone,
email, or written note to the Librarian.

Reserves
Requests to reserve books which are in circulation may be made phone,
email, or written note to the Librarian. An individual may reserve as many as three items, but may not check out more items than established in the circulation policy. Reserved books will be brought to the monthly club meeting for disbursement or per arrangements made by the Librarian and the borrower. Reserve items for which multiple reserves exist must be checked out by the next club meeting following notification or the borrower risks losing position on the reserve wait list. If materials on reserve become available and a person already has the maximum number of items checked out, they must return an item in exchange for the reserve item within a week of notification of its availability or risk losing their reserve position.

Fees
There are no fees for using the library at this time.

Fines/Penalties
There are no fines for overdue materials. Once a book or other library material is overdue, the borrower will be notified once by the librarian by phone, mail, or email. A person with overdue library material may not check out any other materials until the overdue (or lost) book is returned or replaced. Members with materials overdue for more than 3 months may not renew their membership. At the end of the year, and again prior to the termination of Yodel subscriptions (in April?) the Librarian will provide to the Membership Chairman a list of people who must pay for lost materials before renewing.

Replacement
Any lost library material must be replaced at the borrower's expense. Replacements must be of equal or better quality than the one lost. Used books may be replaced with used books. At the Librarian's discretion, lost books may be replaced by books different than the book which was lost but judged to be of equal value. Also at the Librarian's discretion, a replacement fine can be paid, which is to be applied to the purchase of a replacement book.

Gifts
The Librarian will accept additional materials to be added to the library or cash donations to acquire such materials. Since OSAT qualifies under IRS Code as a 501(c)(3) organization, such gifts may be tax deductible. Accordingly, the Librarian is authorized to provide receipts for gifts with fair market value estimates of their value.

Long Term Plans
It is hoped that the JDH Memorial Library can be a growing resource. Some of the ideas for future development of the library include
