Hike: Koko Crater
Date: Sunday, February 15, 1998
Weather: Sunny with some clouds
|
Time Started: 8:45 AM
Time Finished: 12:45 PM
Round trip duration: 4 hours
|
Party: Wayne Shibata, Devin Nakayama, & Alex Okihara |
We started off walking on a dirt road which leads to the crater. We decided to
follow the Hikers Guide, and take the trail leading up the left side of the crater.
The ridge lies just ahead of us.
Unknowingly, we missed the trail heading up the ridge, and continued past the fork.
As we continued on the wrong trail, we encountered some cool looking plants like
this cactus.
Looking up at the rim, we could see several people already up there.
Finally, we found the trail! It rises quickly, and is very steep.
From the top, we had some nice views of the golf course below.
In the beginning, the trail isn't too narrow.
Along the way, there was this cool rock formation that I had to sit on.
It was pretty spooky up there, especially with the wind blowing.
This picture was taken from a window-like formation on the crater's rim.
This is a view of Sandy Beach that you don't see everyday. The ocean
looks so blue and inviting.
Looking toward Cockroach Bay, there were many cars already in the parking lot.
Koko Crater has some amazing rock formations. In this photo, Wayne makes
his way up the trail on a narrow ledge, as Devin wonders if he can get
back down.
Looking down, we could see the trail that we had come up on. As you can
see, it is level for a while.
Hey! This rock is getting heavy! Put down the camera and give me a hand
with this thing!
There are some treacherous spots on this hike, like this narrow section.
We're almost there!
At the top, it was group shot time! Here we are at the top of a metal-grated roof.
There is a lot of vandalism at the top, but there is one nice piece of artwork.
