Numerous Federal laws have been enacted to protect the environment and wildlife. Environmental protection laws protect the safety and well-being of communities from excessive and unneccary emission of environmental pollutants and wildlife laws protect endangered or threatented species s well as migratory birds.
As part of the framework of environmental laws and regulations, the EPA has identified more than 700 substances as hazardous to the environment. Other substances through not hazardous, may otherwise be considered environmental pollutants if discharged into the Nation's waterways. The U.S. Departments of the Interior and the Commerce have identified more than 1,500 species of wildlife as endangered or threatened.
During 1997, U.S. attorneys initiated criminal investigations involving violations of environmental law against 952 suspects - 47% for an environmental protection offense and 53% for a wildlife offense.
