They don't bark, most won't bite, they don't shed on your clothes, they won't scratch up the furniture and hopefully will never get into the trash. But don't be fooled -- there's a lot more to fish than pretty shapes and colors. People keep fish for a variety of reasons. Some find fish relaxing; indeed studies show that the human heart rate slows when watching a fish, which is why so many doctor's offices have tanks. Others collect fish for their beauty and strangeness, traits that are often interchangeable. Still others simply enjoy the challenge, for it is possible that keeping fish requires the greatest responsibility of all pet ownership. Aquarists must control the universe for their fish -- from the air and the light to the food and even the molecular composition of the water in which they swim. It's a tough job. But millions of people worldwide find it well worth the effort. |
