WHAT WAS YOUR ANCESTOR'S OCCUPATION? WHO WERE THEIR NEIGHBOURS? WHERE DID THEY LIVE? DID THEY SPEAK GAELIC? WHO WAS LIVING WITH THEM AT THE TIME? CHECK THE CENSUS FOR DETAILS!

Every 10 years in 19th Century Britain there was a census taken. From the 1841 Census on, they provide a wealth of material for family historians. Giving the names of the family plus occupation and place of birth details. Along with age/relationship and address details. In the Scottish ones, whether the person is a Gaelic speaker or not is even given.
In the case of common surnames, unless there is some background details on the family, I can only search with a name and exact address. However, if the census place is a small village etc. then I will do a search for the standard fee of $20. Larger searches done without sufficient details will be more expensive.
