Frequently Asked Questions
What happens after I apply?
After you complete your application, YARD staff will assess your suitability to join the group. If you are successful they will then work with you to develop a placement that best fits your interests and goals for your trip.

I don't feel I have any skills. Can I make a difference?
Regardless of your skill level, you will have a meaningful impact. Your very presence is treasured and valued.

Why pay a fee?
The communities we work with have limited resources and are unable to support your costs for food, shelter, transportation and supervision. Your fee not only pays for the obvious needs of a volunteer but is also used to help create economic sustainability and community development. This can take many different forms such as providing skills, tools, knowledge and funding to create various health, educational and development projects that will work towards improving the quality of life for all in the community.

Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Traveling abroad is exciting, but like life, it is uncertain. It is for this reason that coverage is mandatory for all volunteers taking part in a programme overseas.

What is not included in the programme cost?
Airfare, visa fees (£30 pounds payable at the airport), transfer from Nairobi to Gatanga division, travel/medical insurance, phone calls, internet use, tourist excursions (e.g. safaris) and personal spending money.

Are there any additional costs?
In-country travel expenses may vary. For specific information regarding potential aditional costs, please contact Sebastian youthactiondev@yahoo.com or Tom Ashton tjashton@gmail.com

What kind of orientation is offered before my departure?
To thoroughly perpare you for travel, YARD staff will provide you comprehensive informational documents and personalized travel guideance. We aslo recomend you get a travel guide book, e.g. Lonely Planet, Footprint, Rough Guide etc...

Will I have a specific placement for my volunteer work?
The areas in which you participate will depend on your interests, skills and the needs of the community. We suggest you work in several areas to get a well rounded experience of working in Kenya. You will work with a supervisor who will asist you in finding ways to contribute effectively. We will ask that all volunteers be flexible and willing to pitch in where needed.

How far in advance do I need to apply for a programme?
It is recommended that you apply for a programme at least 30 days before your anticipated departure to ensure that space is available, you have time to prepare and you have obtained the neccessary immunizations, visas etc...

What is your age policy?
The minimum age for volunteers is 20 years old (exceptions may be possible). The minimum age for a child travelling with a parent or guardian is 10 years. Any minors must be acompanied by a parent, a legal guardian or a person appoainted by that parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must take full responsibilty.

What are the people like in general?
Kenyans are very friendly folk and will stop to greet you and talk you. This is a sign of respect. You will notice this most of the time you are greeted. It is not unusual to get invited to someone's home for a cup of tea, and you could even be offered food.
