Quick Guide to the YARD Volunteer Policies
Legal status
Volunteers are not oficers of the country of origin's government. They do not have diplomatic immunity. They are subject to Kenyan laws while in Kenya and will will be treated in accordance with the local laws.

Personal appearance
Volunteers should dress appropriately both on and off the job and respect the host countries attitudes towards personal appearance.

Financial gain
Volunteers may not recieve payment for any of their services while in Kenya.

Drugs
YARD takes a very firm position on the use and possession of marijuana or other prohibited drugs. A volunteer found to be involved with illegal drugs in a manner not authorized for medical purposes will have his placement terminated.

Alcohol
The use of alcohol is left to the discretion of the volunteer. Inappropriate behaviour or inability to perform in an assignemnet resulting from abuse of alcohol may be cause for the placement to be terminated.

Political expression
Volunteers are to avoid becoming involved in the country's politics in any way. It is YARD's expectation that volunters will understand and support them in this.

Fireams
Volunteers are not allowed to posses, carry or use firearms.

Official agreements

Volunteers may not sign contracts, agreements, certificates or any other official documents or make verbal agreements on behalf of YARD.

Volunteer transportation

Volunteers may not operate vehicles while in Kenya except when they are outside of the placement/YARD site or when approved by the Programme Manager to do their specific job or to attend to an emergency.

Sexual harassment
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimintion prohibited by the Kenyan government. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours and other verbal or phsical conduct of  sexual nature will not be tollerated in Kenya.
