Gohan is basically the second most important character of DBZ, and he could have been first. After the Cell Saga, Toriyama was debating on making Gohan the number 1 character, but due to fan response he kept Gokou in the # 1 spot. At the beginning of DBZ, Gohan is only about four and a half, but he was already the strongest fighter without even knowing it. The reason he was so strong was because he easily had the potential to be the strongest fighter in the universe, it's just that he had to be able to learn to actually use his power, and not just let it spurt out when he gets pissed. During the series, he learns to control his power more and more due to almost constant fighting and/or training. During the Cell Game, he shows his superiority by becoming the first to go SSJ2. After the Cell Game, Gohan slips down in the ranks as he focuses more on studying than fighting. If not for the influence of his mother, Chi-chi, or if he had much more influence from his father, he could have stayed at the top after the Cell Game. Gohan becomes a nerd.
