I have had many people write me with suggestions on just where my direct line ties into the Stinnett family. When it comes to your direct line, you want to be as accurate as possible. I have came to the conclusion that my direct line is from the line of Old John Stinnett. I have drawn this conclusion from several family members and the things we remember hearing when we were "Little Pictures With Big Ears". Most remember John Stinnett as the husband of Elizabeth Wilkerson, yet research shows he married at least one other time, once to Bessie Justus. Marriage date for John and Elizabeth Justus was 02-Jan-1788. Looking back over old posts and information I have gathered in over 5 years of research, I remember my mother telling me that Grandpa's family came from Virginia prior to Tennessee. Several times she mentioned "Tobacco Row" and "Stinnett Mountain". Also, there was a great deal of controversy between my Gramps and another family of Stinnett's in the next town over, his exact words being "They ain't even Stinnetts". These same Stinnetts were a direct line of the family of Alexander McKessick, who took the family name. Like a pot calling a kettle black, if you check out my webpages some, you will see that perhaps we weren't even Stinnetts either. But I am certain that these were words passed down from many generations when there was some controversy because Alexander McKessick "Stinnett" was heir to the family lands. Check out smokykin.com for the full story. Also, Grandpa was close friends with his cousin, also Robert Franklin Stinnett, who was the son of Lafayette and Rosetta Denton Stinnett. It appears that finally I have linked to my Stinnett lines, which will take me back to about 1670, when the first Stinnett family came over on the ship the VENTURE". I have noted many just bunch all the children of Old John with the union of him and Elizabeth, yet the fact remains that he and Elizabeth did not marry until 1823. Most of the children of John were born well before that date. John Stinnett was born about 1760. John is also well known to be one of the first settlers in the Jones Cove area of Tennessee. There is much documented online about Old John and his wife Elizabeth Wilkerson, not a lot of sense in repeating other websites information. If you have questions please feel free to write. I will be adding more to this page as i discover more. If I can be proven wrong on this, I will accept it without malice. I do want my line correct. As stated before, this info is yet "unproven". I am extremely proud to have been able to finally untangle some of this mess my predessesors left me.
