Hello, and welcome to my "Brick Wall".  I have been trying to verify my direct Stinnett line for some time now.  There have been many interesting theories offered, all of which I deeply appreciate, but very recent information has turned up with evidence that none of these theories are correct.  The evidence points to the parents of John Stinnett as being "old" John Stinnett and his first wife Bessie Justus.   I have many reasons for believing this.  For one, my mother often talked of Stinnett Mountain and Tobacco Row, well known landmarks among the Amherst County, Virginia Stinnetts.  Also, Benjamin Stinnett lived near John, Benjamin being a  very common names among the family.  Visit the page for more evidence.

Other facts we have located:
In the 1830 census of Blount County, Tennessee, there is a John Stinnett in the 30-40 age group who would fit.  There are two males under age 5, (William and another son) and one male age 5 to 10, (Samuel)   Also one female age 5 to 10, (?).  There is also a Benjamin Stinnett nearby, age 40 to 50.

1870 census:  Civil District 11, Knoxville, TN
John Stinnett bon Va.
1870
John Stinnett 65-Laborer
Tempa 25
Rebecca 23
William 30
Harriett 29

Samuel named his first son John, for his father.
Temperance also names her first son John, and names a daughter Rebecca.

Blount County 1850 census has William Stinnett age 22, Harritt age 21, living near Samuel  age 26 and Martha Stinnett age 26.  Listed with Samuel and Martha is one child, John age 1.

In the 1860 census of Blount County, TN, there is Samuel Stennet age 38 and Martha age 37, with Martha age 37, Children: John 11, William 4, and Margaret 1.  Living near are John Stinnett age 65 with children, Tempa 25, Rebecca 23, William 30 and Harriet 29.

The grand daughter of Temperance, Millie Burgett, has very recently located the death certificate for Temperance.  Until now, we had no idea who the mother was.  Her name was
Margaret James, and the state of both parents were from Tennessee.   There are quite a few folks named Margaret James who fit that time period, but that doesn't mean that we won't ever be able to find her.

In the 1900 Blount County Census, William is listed with mother as born in North Carolina.
There are more then a few Jame's located in NC, hopefully soon I may discover which family Margaret belongs to.
I have finally came to the conclusion that John Stinnett was the son of
John and Bessie Justus Stinnett. It is too long of a story to go into here with limited space, but if you want details of how this came about, please do not hesitate to write and ask.  I plan to stand by this until someone proves me otherwise.  If you can prove otherwise, it will be considered constructive for me.  I do want my direct line correct.

It appears that there has been next to no research on John Stinnett, other then the fact that he had the above mentioned children.  Even his wife was unknown until very recently.  There has been even less research on the son, William Stinnett, who is my direct line.

My friend,  Jeanette, descendant of Thomas Cburch has a page on the descendants of Thomas.
Link added here, just use your back button to return.  Thomas Church Stinnett is yet unproven as a son of John Stinnett born 1795.

Visit Jeanette's Webpage for more information on Thomas Church Stinnett.  She has a picture of Thomas C. as well as pictures of his line.
