December 2002 - January 4, 2003Early December I sanded the kayak entirely, with 80, 150, then 220 grit. This took me about two full afternoons. The surface had to be uniformly cloudy with no dark areas or indentations.
Then, the hull was ready for 2 coats of high-build primer. I used Z-Spar Hi-Hide White. Again, the sanding took me about 2 full afternoons, resulting with almost all of the primer sanded off.
Next, came the application of the finishing coats. I chose Off-White from Interlux. The paint is thin, and I've had to apply 5 coats using a foam-roller and tipping out with a foam brush. In between coats, I wet-sanded by hand using 400 grit.
The deck is varnished with several coats of Z-Spar's Captain Varnish
