Phalaborwa / Kruger National Park
South Africa
October 2002
Some friends and I stayed at a place called Sefapane Lodge & Safaris.  It's a wonderful little place to stay, complete with African style hutches, called rondavels, a really nice indoor/outdoor restaurant, safari packages for trips to Kruger, and all of it at pretty low prices.  Just a warning - no telephone or TVs in any of the rondavels, but there is A/C and running water.  It was the perfect place to escape to.
This has to be the tiniest airport I've ever flown into.  There were two gates, which you can see in the picture, one for arrival, one for departure.  The animals in the picture are statues, but the real thing isn't far away.
This guy had no fear.  He just lazily ate the roots of the tree while we watched.  Elephants spend about 18 hours a day eating, and they sleep in intervals, at most 30 minutes at a time.
This is a young giraffe we spotted on shore from our river safari.
