Haste Myths


1. It is very important to understand that haste is an increase in number of attacks and not a decrease in delay! This is clearly malarkey induced by doing the math two dfferent ways and giving yourself a migraine. If you increase the number of attacks, the delay decreases. If you decrease the delay, the number of attacks increase. It's the same thing, only how you do the math differs.

2. Weapon delay can never be decreased below 10/9/whatever number! For every hard weapon delay cap someone has tried to declare, someone has found a parse showing a lower delay. The lowest delay will be determined by the maximum possible haste applied to the fastest possible weapon. There doesn't appear to be a hard software cap.

3. A Haste item's effect doesn't work until you reach the same level as the haste % it has, eg, FBSS is useless before level 21. I just parsed a level 1 warrior with an FBSS. He was showing 9.6% haste.

Haste Math


So, you have a haste value, X%, and you know the weapon delay, Y.
The modified delay, Y' can be found with the following formula:

Y' = Y/(1+(X/100))


Simple example: 50% haste, weapon delay is 30.

The modified delay is 30/(1+(50/100)) = 30/1.5 = 20

Going the other way: You know the weapon delay, Y, and you've figured out the modified delay, Y', by parsing your log file, and want to know the haste:

X = 100*((Y/Y')-1)


Simple example: Y=30 for your slashing weapon, and your log shows that between 19:32:02 and 19:41:42 you slashed or attempted to slash 230 times, discounting crushes (which were the mace in your offhand) and slashes with the same time signature (which were double attacks). 19:41:42 - 19:32:02 = 9 minutes 40 seconds = 580 sec. 580/230 = 2.522 seconds per swing. Modified Delay = 10 * (Seconds per swing) = 25.22

So the amount of Haste is X = 100*((30/25.22)-1) = 100*(1.1896-1) = 100*0.1896 = 19%

It's also possible to determine haste with Magelo, which may be slightly more accurate.

Clicky haste is self only, Clicky and Procced haste is Spell-Type, so it stacks with Item-Type Haste. Dark Cloak of the Sky is rumored to be bard haste, but this seems improbable to me.

As a general rule, you may stack one each of Item Haste, Spell Haste and Song Haste. If you have multiple haste items, the highest one will determine your item haste. Spell haste is generally provided by an enchanter, but occasionally a shaman or a clicky item. Some haste bard songs also count as spell haste rather than song haste, and hence conflict with chanter/shammy buffs. In general, there is a cap of 100% Haste at level 60, but some bard songs can take you over that cap. Sometimes, if you have two different kinds of Spell-Type Haste, the buff icons will stack, but you only get the higher of the two haste components. This is especially true of Spell-Type bardsongs, like Jonthan's Whistling Warsong.

The amount of haste given by bardsongs can be increased beyond the listed amount by using an instrument (usually brass) or the bard epic, or singing ampification. The Jonthan's line is not affected by instruments since it is sung.
