Tourism grant The island’s tourism sector is expected to benefit from a grant of almost 5 hundred thousand EC dollars form the government of Ireland.
A press release from the Development Unit sates that the grant was approved by Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Ireland Liz O’Donnell T.D.
Minister O’Donnell has responsibility for Overseas Development Assistance and Human Rights. According to the release the monies will be used to provide technical assistance to reposition the island’s tourism sector including developing a comprehensive National Tourism Strategy for Montserrat.
It says the implementation plans will facilitate the rebuilding of the tourism sector in the short, medium and long term and position it a major catalyst for sustainable economic and social development.
Law Revision The island’s Law Revision Committee is inviting the public and public servants to report any problems and suggestions to improve the laws of Montserrat.
The committee was formed last month to revise the laws of Montserrat and advance the efforts to have them published.
In press release to ZJB News the committee says it is soliciting the support of the public so that these matters can be discussed and if appropriate a report be made to the Executive Council.
According to the release this would result in an amendment or new Act being presented to the Legislative Council.
The committee says it will be meeting from time to time to consider the laws of Montserrat and ways to bring about the correction of errors, the updating of the laws, making minor improvements and dealing with any problems with the law.
It says all communications would be treated in confidence.
MVO Review The Montserrat Volcano Observatory has released the preliminary report of last week’s Scientific and Hazard Assessment of the Soufriere Hills Volcano.
Top scientists from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and the Caribbean conducted the review, which takes place every six months.
Among other things the report confirmed that the second episode of dome growth, which began in November 1999, is continuing.
In comparison to with the first episode, growth has been steadier and has a similar average rate of about three cubic meters per second, that is 600,000 tons of lava per day.
As we hear in this Winston Cabey report the findings focused on the July 29th large dome collapse, which involved the loss of 45 million, the second largest volcanic event of the eruption. Cue in: there was significant Cue out Hot key: duration:
P W D Lab The Public Works Department’s Quality Control and Standards Laboratory is being reestablished.
The project is been financed by DFID and coordinated by Roughton International of the UK and Emerald Consultants.
Since the volcanic crisis tests on concrete, soil, and other building materials used in construction have been sent to Antigua and other neighbouring islands for testing.
Director of Public Works Ken Foulds says the reestablishment of the lab is necessary in light of the large number of ongoing building projects where testing of building materials is necessary to maintain proper standards.
Mister Foulds also announced that a seminar will be held here next Tuesday to bring together contractors and the makers of concrete products to update them on the standards as laid out in the Montserrat building code.
