Work is being planned to improve facilities at the Brades Primary School.
That’s according to the Honourable Minister of Education Idabelle Meade, who was updating the public on progress made in her ministry.
She said the President of the Brades Parent Teachers Association, the Department for International Development and the Governor’s Office are working on a project to improve the school yard.
Misses Meade says pledges of assistance have also come from the Montserrat Football Association, the Parent Teachers Association and the Salem Community Group, which will donate play equipment.
Both the day care centre and the primary school will use the equipment.
The Minister of Education also announced that the government is seeking funding for two additional school buses.
Mrs. Meade says this is to ensure that children travel in comfort and safety.
Members of the Montserrat Boys Brigade are wrapping up Founder week.
The week closes this weekend with a breakfast and lunch, a variety concert and an enrollment service.
Another young Montserratian has excelled academically.
Marsha Meade has received a BA (Honours) Business Administration Degree from Kingston University in London, a school, renowned to be one of the top business schools in the United Kingdom.
In June 2000 Miss Meade gained eight distinctions in the final year on the Higher National Diploma in Business and Finance.
At her graduation from this course in January she was awarded the Sam Thevathasan Memorial prize for overall excellence.
In November 2000 Miss Meade won a 1000-pound scholarship from Kinston University after submitting a winning entry essay.
Prior to and during her time at Kingston University, Marsha pursued part time courses and gained First Class Passes in Administration, Integrated Business technology and Computerised Accounts at Lambeth College, Brixton Centre.
On her achievement the former Town Hill resident says it was a challenge but she came through with grace and the support and encouragement of family and close friends.
Historian Sir Howard Fergus has published another book.
Montserrat in the Twentieth Century Trials and Triumphs was released this week, and contains the prolific writer's most recent account of Montserrat's history.
Sir Howard is a professor at the University of the West Indies and until recently Speaker of the Legislative Council.
Among his other publications is Montserrat: History of a Caribbean Colony.
The Ministry of Education paid tribute to one of its most faithful workers today.
A lucnheon was held for Leroy "Cippio" Lee at the Tropical Mansions Suites, hosted by the Minister of Education Idabelle Meade.
Lee has recently retired after serving 25 years as a school bus driver.
The event was attended by officials in the Ministry of Education and fellow bus drivers.
Mrs. Meade says Lee's work was outstanding and added value to the lives of officials teachers and students whom he transported safely to and from school.
She says no praise could too high for a man who has contributed so much to education on Montserrat.
Accolades for retired Speaker of the Legislative Council have been many this week.
On Tuesday it was the turn of the local branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
The Association hosted a farewell ceremony on Tuesday at the Vue Point Hotel for the man who has become Montserrat's first knight, the first black one in any case.
Among those paying tribute were Chief Minister John Osborne and other members of parliament.
Former Chief Minister Rueben Meade said Sir Howard's impact on Montserrat and the Commonwealth created recognition for Montserrat.
Part of the reason he was elected by six successive parliaments as Speaker.
A man who served with Sir Howard for 25 years as deputy Speaker D.R.V. Edwards, says the former Speaker's performance earned him the respect of members of Parliament.
The Boys Brigade wrapped up Founders Week with an enrolment service on Sunday.
During the service the Brigade welcomed new recruits into its ranks.
On island for the event was representative for the eastern and southern Caribbean Mitchel Coates.
Mister Coates who also witnessed the Boys Brigade concert on Saturday is leaving this message for members and prospective members.
The three members of the Montserrat Allied Workers Union have reported on their participation in the 14th Triennial Delegate Congress and the Pre Congress Seminar for Young Workers in Trinidad.
Montserrat was represented by MAWU General Secretary Hylroy Bramble, Eslyn Samuel from the Montserrat Water Authority and Leon Greenaway from Monlec.
The three share the view that their participation in the Trinidad meetings will significantly boost the union’s Education and outreach program.
Mrs. Samuel’s workshop focused on Aids in the Work place while Mister Greenaway and his colleagues explored the role young workers can play in protecting the future of Trade Unions.
MAWU’s General Secretary Hylroy Bramble believes that local trade unions need restructuring.
He says it was important to involve the young workers in the Congress as they will be instrumental in the future development of the trade union movement on Montserrat.
Remembrance Day will be observed on Sunday November 11th.
The occasion is a national day of remembrance for those who died in the two world wars from 1914 to 1918 and from 1939 to 1945.
The Department of Administration has announced that the service will be held at the Faith Tabernacle Church in Brades.
It says all uniform bodies, permanent secretaries and heads of departments are invited to attend.
Members of the Montserrat Girl Guides Association is celebrating sixty five years of existence.
Members took part in a fun day at Salem Park yesterday to mark the occasion.
The movement was started in 1936 by Misses Moire, the wife of an Acting Commissioner of Montserrat.
Former Guides Commissioner Eileen Edwards spoke of the advantages of the organization and the good influence that girls can have on the community.
Members of the Public got the opportunity o see officers of the Royal Montserrat Police Force at work in the station.
The officers hosted visitors during an open day between 8:30 and 4:30.
Today’s open day is part of a week long programme of activities marking Police and Fire Community Week.
Commissioner of Police Alexander Elder told ZJB News that the day was a success.
He says overall aim is to allow members of community to learn more about the work of Police and Fire Officers and the improve relationship.
