Javan Cochoa Cochoa azurea (2004)
One of the most sought after birds in Java, this rare fella is found only in dense and cool montane forests. It is with thorough searching with the aid of a guide, Eddy, as he is called that we managed to located one bird at 2400 m asl at
Air Panas, Gunung Gede-Pangrango (Java) amidst misty conditions. We were lucky to have a Sunda Whistling-Thrush perch beside it so that comparisons can be made. Overall, this bird appears almost jet-black and the poor lighting does not do justice to its overwise iridescent blue plumage.

Rhinoceros Hornbill Buceros rhinoceros (2004)
Every dawn in Danum Valley, the roars of this magnificent bird would be reverberating through the forests, and thanks to this, this bird is rather conspicuous. A group of 4-6 birds comes to feed on a massive fig tree in front of the
Danum Valley Field Centre office, often displacing its smaller cousins, Bushy-crested and Black Hornbills.

(Calidrids of Singapore)
1997

Calidrids are among the most confusing waders to identify, thanks to the large diveristy within this genus, as well as the overall similarities between plumages of the members.
There are a few features to look for to identify this difficult groups. Most of the time, a often used feature is the wing pattern observed while in flight. Another way will be to scrutinise the head patterns and compare beak proportion to the head through a high-power telescope lens.. Very mind-boggling and eye straining indeed!

A good place to study calidrids )or peeps as it is sometimes called would be at Sungei Buloh.

Borneo Bristlehead Pityriasis gymnocephala (2005) (below)
The weird calls of the bizarre Borneo Bristlehead, one of the Borneo's most enigmatic and highly sought birds echo the soul of Borneo's lush jungles. Its striking blazes of red, yellow and black almost give it and ethereal glow in the darks of the rainforest, which sadly is not given full justice here. This bird was on the nature trail behind the Danum Valley Field Centre, Sabah.     Medium - Black Pens
