The Garden Pond

The photographic pond resides in the backyard of my mother and her husband. This is a man-made creation. The dimensions of the pond are approximately 4ft x 10ft. The water is refreshed using a circulating pump. Additional "pretties" include a rock waterfall and a fountain sprayer. The pond is populated with goldfish some of whom are living into their 3rd year. These fish have been bought or donated by various friends and family members.

My Daughter and Mother went on the first fish-buying expedition and as a result several of the fish have been given names and seem to have individual personalities. As the geographic location of this pond is in Eastern Iowa, the water freezes in the winter. The goldfish survive at the bottom to resurface the next spring with the thaw. Much like Persephone of Greek mythology.

Other seasonal life in the pond include the frogs. It remains a mystery just how these frogs come to be residents in this pond as the garden is not close to any other water sources. The lifecycles of the frogs can be observed from the slimy eggs clinging to the sides of the rocks, through the tadpole stage, to the young adults and their melodious serenades.

Of particular interest to me are the beautiful waterlillies which are the subject of the photography.
