Notes for THOMAS THORNE:

The information that Martin Thorn, Sr. was the son of Thomas Thorn and Mary Lee of Northampton County, NC came from a record found in the FHC by Joanne Thorne. The record was submitted by James H.L. Lawler, c/o Mary I. Lawler, 4068 Ironron Drive, W. Richland, WA, USA 99352

Martin Thorn is first documented in Edgecombe County in 1752 when he and Charles Lee jointly bought land.

Abstracts of Deeds - Edgecombe Precinct - Edgecombe Co., NC 1732-1758 by Hofmann:

Pg. 222

Then on the 2nd of Nov. 1757, Samuel Lee of Northampton CO. sold to Martin Thorn of Edge.Co. for 15 pounds money of VA. the same 225 acres on the south side of Town Creek, joining Beaver Dam Swamp.

3. WILLIAM3 THORNE (MARTIN2, THOMAS1) was born Bef. 1775 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1800 in Edgecombe County, NC. He married MARY TAYLOR, daughter of WILLIAM TAYLOR and MARY ?BATTLE.

Notes for WILLIAM THORNE:

From the research of Janet Biondo

It appears that this William Thorn, with wife, Mary Taylor, resided on Mary's father's land, located on the North side of Beach Run. This land was left to Mary in her father, William Taylor's Will in 1783.

The other William Thorne residing at the same time in Edgecomb County appears to have been from Hertford CO., NC and purchased 372 acres near Autry's Creek in 1786 from the Stokes family heirs (DB4-417). This William Thorn and wife, Leah, sold the same 372 acres in 1788 to Samuel Taylor (DB5-426). William and Leah appear to have moved to Wake Co., NC.

Children of WILLIAM THORNE and MARY TAYLOR are:

i. MARTIN4 THORNE, b. 1780.

Notes for MARTIN THORNE:

Martin Thorn, Jr. was the sole heir of his grandfather's (Martin Thorn, Sr.) estate. There is an existing court record that stipulated he was the grandson. He inherited the estate in 1803.

4. ii. TAYLOR THORNE, b. November 30, 1782.

5. iii. THEOPHILUS THORNE, b. 1783, ?North Carolina; d. 1847, Spartanburg District, SC.

6. iv. ELIZABETH A. THORNE, b. 1785; d. 1880.

v. BEADY THORNE, b. Aft. 1785; m. (______) POPE.

Notes for (______) POPE:

Probably either Hardy Pope, or Dempsey Pope. Both of these men signed the Land Transaction where the 8 children of William Thorn and Mary Taylor sold the property that they had inherited from their mother. These were the sons of Jacob Pope.

vi. MARY THORNE, b. Aft.

4. TAYLOR4 THORNE (WILLIAM3, MARTIN2, THOMAS1) was born November 30, 1782. He married MARGARET EDWARDS.

Children of TAYLOR THORNE and MARGARET EDWARDS are:

i. JOHN E.5 THORNE, b. January 15, 1812.

ii. WILLIAM BENNETT THORNE, b. 1816.

iii. TEMPERANCE THORNE, b. 1821; d. August 06, 1916.

v. REDMON THORNE.

vi. JOSEPH THORNE.

vii. MARTHA THORNE, m. (_____) RICKS.

viii. MARY THORNE, m. (______) JONES.

5. THEOPHILUS4 THORNE (WILLIAM3, MARTIN2, THOMAS1) was born 1783 in ?North Carolina, and died 1847 in Spartanburg District, SC. He married JENNIE POPE.

Notes for THEOPHILUS THORNE:

Theophilus was most probably the son of William Thorn and Mary Taylor. This must be the Theophilus who is mentioned in a abstract of Edgecombe County, NC deed: DB12-206---William THORN, Beady POPE, WInifred ROBERTSON, Theophilus THORN, Martin THRON, Taylor THORN, Mary POPE, and Elizabeth THORN sold a tract of land jointly; the deed was also signed by Hardy POPE, Wiley ROBERTSON, and Dempsey POPE, Jan 28, 1806. (Theophilus did not sign this land sale. If our speculation is correct, he didn't sign it because he had already moved to Spartanburg District, SC, where he is found first in 1804).

This is most probably land that the eight brothers and sisters inherited from their mother Mary Taylor. This is the same tract of land that Mary inherited from her father, William Taylor. The two POPE men are probably the husbands of Mary and Beady. These men were most probably brothers of Jennie POPE.

We know that Theophilus was in Spartanburg District by the early 1800s. He is mentioned in two land transactions as documented in Spartanburg County/District South Carolina Deed Abstracts Books A-T, 1785-1827. (1)Book P, p. 399-400, Feb. 27,1804--He is a witness to the sale of land from George Poole to David Pope (Jennie's brother?). (2) Book Q,p. 109-110, Dec. 12, 1817---bought land from John McBee. Witnesses were Elizabeth (likely his sister) and her husband, Whitney Hines.

The monument to Theophilus Thorne that was erected at Arrowood Church in Chesnee, SC has a great deal of incorrect info on it. It was erected by Jennie E. Smith, 1966, daughter of Frances Eugenia Thorne, (daughter of William Taylor Thorne and Mary Berry Turner) and William McClellan Smith. Apparently family legends were the source for much of the early information. The monument states that Theophilus

lived from 1744-1847 and that he migrated from VA to SC soon after the Revolutionary War.

*Interesting note: Some sources give the birth year of Martin Thorn, Sr. as 1744. I have as 1735 in this chart. But, it is interesting that the year 1744 is given for Martin and that family legend gives that year as the birth year of Theophilus. Could family legend be confusing several members of the direct line and combining them into incorrect data about Theophilus?

More About THEOPHILUS THORNE:

Buried: Near present Arrowood Baptist Church

Notes for JENNIE POPE:

Family legend from some older family members says that Jennie Pope was a recent immigrant from Ireland. I feel it is more likely that Jennie Pope was a member of the Pope Family that was prominent in Edgecombe County, NC in the mid to late 1700s. She is likely related to the POPE men who married Theophilus THORN's sisters.

Children of THEOPHILUS THORNE and JENNIE POPE are:

7. i. EDWIN5 THORNE, b. October 15, 1799, Spartanburg District, SC; d. July 20, 1868, Spartanburg District, SC.

6. ELIZABETH A.4 THORNE (WILLIAM3, MARTIN2, THOMAS1) was born 1785, and died 1880. She married WHITNEY HINES , SR., son of WILLIAM HINES and SARAH WHITNEY.

Notes for ELIZABETH A. THORNE:

Elizabeth Thorn has been give as a daughter of Theophilus Thorn and Jennie Pope in family legend and on the Monument at Arrowood Church. This info is incorrect. Elizabeth was sister to Theophilus Thorn and either came with him to SC or he followed her and her husband, Whitney Hines, to SC.

Notes for WHITNEY HINES , SR.:

More About EDWIN THORNE:

Notes for JAMES CLINTON THORNE:

Died in the Civil War at age 16. There is a Christon Thorne listed in the HOS as having been killed at Wilderness. I believe that this must have been Clinton and was a typographical error in the book.

Assuming that this is our Clinton, he was a Private in 5th Regiment, S.C.V., Company D or I.

Dot Gwinn gives his name as James Christon.

Notes for NATHANIEL THORNE:

From Mary Sue's Thorne's notes, he was a Captain. He may have received a promotion that is not accounted for in the HOS. It is said that he commanded a division and was wounded in the 2nd Battle of Manassas. His company did participate in that battle, again according to HOS, so that must be where he lost his arm.

Also from Mary Sue Thorne's notes:

William Taylor Thorne, a son of Edwin, married Mary Turner and they had 13 children. He was a Captain during the Civil War and commanded a Division at the 2nd Battle of Mannassas. He lost his right arm in the war. My Father, Lee, said William was Supt. of the Spartanburg County Home, commonly called "The Poor House" and when Lee was in his teens, he had many experiences of laying out (preparing for burial) and making wooden coffins. William was a Commissioner of Spartanburg County for twenty years and had only one vote cast against him in all that time. A Circuit Rider Pastor came by horseback to Arrowwood Church once a month to preach and on most every visit for twenty years, this Preacher spent Saturday night and had Sunday dinner with William and his family. William was a highly respected citizen and was called "Capt'n Thorne". He died in 1916 at age 86. I remember seeing many Civil War veterans at his funeral, who were weeping openly. As dozens of these Veterans filed by the casket, they had many complimentary remarks to offer. William had slaves, two of whom remained after the war as they had no place to go, a man and a woman. The man "Hen"came from Africa and told how the slave traders came with brightly colored beads and trinkets to lure the people to the boats, where they were secured in the holds. William’s fireplace in the kitchen was wide enough to burn whole rails from old fences. Lee said Hen would build a fire on each end and then sit in the middle with the fire burning toward him. Captain William was often called upon for help when there was trouble in the homes of the Veterans as he had been the commanding officer of most of them.
