This Is
Our Story
In 1994
I met
the man who eventually
became
my husband. When it
became
apparent that something might
come out
of our chance meeting, I wrote a
poem to
him. It is called " I Wasn't Looking"
and he
wrote one for me called
" I
Was Looking".
We
eventually combined both
poems,
and it
became a
part of our
wedding
vows.

We were
married
at the
beautiful Housing Works Used Book Cafe
in New
York, on Sunday, March 31, 1996.
We were
both standing on opposite
balconies
facing each other.
In the
middle, on the lower level
were the
guests. They were looking up at us
as we
recited the verses of
"I
Wasn't Looking".

As Roger
said
his
parts he slowly walked
down the
spiral stairs, while I stayed
looking
down at him. When he got to the part
that
said "Now I plan to make you my wife"
he was
standing directly below where I was,
looking
up at me. With every verse we uttered,
you
could hear the guest exclaiming
with ooh's
and ahh's.

I Wasn't
Looking
Jennifer: I wasn't looking, I swear it is
true
how was
I to know that I would meet you---
in my
own world I was wrapped up into---
far
removed from making it with you---

Roger: I was looking, I didn't know
what for---
now that
you are in my life,
I couldn't
ask for more---

Jennifer: you caught my eyes and entrapped
my heart
and when
you spoke, I just knew
that you
and I were meant to collide---

Roger: I've quietly searched for the
other part
of
myself,
to
complete the poet within me---

Jennifer: we are a special bred of poets
though
people don't understand,
we speak
a different language---
not just
words, but feelings and emotions---

Roger: words fail to express our
feelings
every
look, every touch means so much---
our
hearts speak to each other
for
where there is love there is trust---

Jennifer: destiny and fate are like
natural
disasters---
unconcerned
with the havoc they create
as they
bulldoze their way into the heart---

Roger: my heart was in need of love
believing
that one day you would appear---
the day
you came into my life
I spoke
up without fear---

Jennifer: without warning you stepped into
my life
with no
regard for the consequence,
my heart
had been given to another
now I am
certain I must reconsider---

Roger: I have been waiting for you all
my life---
now, I
plan to make you my wife---

Jennifer: I think you and I should make a
pact
to clean
up our acts and follow our hearts---

Roger: I was looking, I didn't know
what for---

Jennifer: I wasn't looking, I swear it is
true---

Roger: now that you are in my life
I couldn't
ask for more--

Jennifer: now that you are in my life
I couldn't
ask for more

Jennifer
& Roger:
I
love you.
