Sanders - Saunders in the American Revolutionary War

JONATHAN SANDERS
New Hampshire Militia. Lived at Haverhill, Grafton Co., NH when he enlisted in the Militia. Applied for pension 14 Apr 1818 while living in Franklin Co., New York. He mar Abigail ??? 25 Feb "several years before the Rev" at Haverhill, NH. In 1820, he was aged 74, with wife Abigail, aged 75 and grandchildren living with him: Jonathan Lock, 23 and Frephina (Trephina ?) Lock, 15.Wife Abigail born 25 Aug 1851. Jonathan died 19 May 1828. His widow applied for pension 23 Feb 1837 while living in Lawrence Co., NY. They had two children before the war (not named). Also listed as Saunders.

JOSEPH SAUNDERS
Virginia State Navy. Served at sea during the War under Capt. William Saunders (no relation given). B. Jun 1757 in Lancaster Co., Va. He moved to Lawrence Co., AL. where he applied for a veteran's pension 26 Sep 1832. He

JOSEPH SAUNDERS
Massachusetts Militia. Lived at Kennebec Co., Maine when he applied for veteran's pension on 6 Apr 1826.

JOSEPH SANDERS, Jr.
Rhode Island Militia. Born 25 May 1758, Westerly, RI, son of Joseph Saunders Sr. Lived there when he enlisted in the RI Militia. He served with Lt. Stephen Saunders (no relationship given). He mar Lydia Crandall, dau of James Crandall of Westerly. On 30 Jun 1776. He died 13 Feb 1835 at Westerly. His widow applied for pension there 12 Sep 1836 at age 82.

JOSHUA SAUNDERS
South Carolina Militia. Served in the Militia under Col. Brandon during 1779. He served under Capt. John Thomas and Col. Brandon from 10 Aug 1780 to 2 Oct 1782.

JOSHUA SANDERS
Georgia Militia. Born abt 1755 in Va. Served as a Sergeant in the Georgia Militia. Mar Ann Williams; they had at least 8 ch.

JOSHUA SANDERS
Massachusetts Militia. Joshua was born Apr 1762 at Billerica, Ma. and lived there when he enlisted in the Militia. In 1785, he moved to Weare, NH. He moved to Fishersfield, NH in 1821 and later to Unity, NH and then to Middlesex, Washington Co., Vt. He applied there for a veteran's pension on 7 Aug 1832. His brother Benjamin Sanders of Tewksbury, Ma. made affidavit of his service 11 Aug 1832 and had also served in the Revolution. He mar Sarah Farmer 5 Feb 1790 at Tewksbury, Ma. He died 4 Feb 1840 at Montpelier, Vt. His widow applied for pension there 3 Aug 1843 at age 73. She still lived there in 1848 and in 1851 lived at East Montpelier. She died 13 Jan 1853. In 1843 and 1851, Jarvill Sanders was a witness to her affidavits, while living in Washington Co., Vt. (no relation was given).

LUKE SANDERS
Rhode Island Militia. Luke was born 12 Apr 1758 at Charlestown, Washington Co., RI, son of Tobias Sanders. He lived there when he enlisted in the Militia. After the war, he moved to Stonington, Ct. for 7 yrs and then moved to what became Barton, Tioga Co., NY in 1800. He applied for a veteran's pension 6 Sep 1832.

MOSES SANDERS Sr.
North Carolina Militia. B. 1742, Downton, Wiltshire Co., England. Served as a private in the Iredell County Regiment, NC Militia. Moved to that part of Franklin Co. which became part of Banks Co., Ga. Mar Sarah ("Sally") Hamilton in Va. They had at least 8 ch. He died 29 Mar 1817 and is buried near Groves Level Baptist Church Cemetery in Banks Co., Ga.

South Carolina Militia. Enlisted as a private and promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant, Captain and Colonel of the Third Regiment of SC Militia.

NATHANIEL SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. North Carolina Militia. B. ca 1756; from Darlington Dist., SC. He enlisted as a private during 1776 in Capt. Conyers Company of Darlington County Militia. He later served in the North Carolina Militia. He died ca 1804 in Darlington Co.

NATHANIEL SANDERS Sr.
Virginia Militia. Mar. Sarah (Sally) Patie, dau of James Patie, in June, 1776 in Caroline Co., Va. He later moved to Gallatin Co., Ky., where he died in Oct 1826. Sally applied for a pension there 3 Feb 1837 at age 78 (Aug 1836); she was born in Caroline Co., Va.

NOAH SANDERS
Massachusetts Militia. Served as a private in Ma. Militia. Received BLW on 31 May 1790. Also listed as Saunders.

OBED SANDERS
New Hampshire Militia. Obed was born 6 Dec 1752 in NH. He lived at Bradford, Vt. when he enlisted in New Hampshire Militia at Elizabeth, NH. He applied for veteran's pension 14 Apr 1818 while living at Franklin Co., NY. In 1820, he was 67 yrs old and had wife Elizabeth, aged 51, with a granddaughter Harriet Meads, aged 12 living with them. He mar 1st Marribah ??? and after she died, mar 2nd Elizabeth Chapman 18 Aug 1787 at Haverhill, NH. She was born 8 Oct 1768 at East Haddon, Ct., dau of Stephen Chapman. Obed died 19 Aug Aug 1826 at Moira, NY. His widow applied for pension 4 Jan 1839 at Lawrence, St. Lawrence Co., NY. She died before 1853. Obed and his first wife's ch: Jonathan Sanders (6 Sep 1771), Benjamin Sanders (6 Sep 1773), John (18 Oct 1775), twins Elizabeth Sanders and Ruth Sanders (18 Apr 1779), James Sanders (3 Apr 1781), Avery Sanders (20 Jun 1783) and David Sanders (Jul 1785).

PETER SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. Peter served in the SC Militia under Col. Horry. He supplied provisions and forage during 1780.

PHILIP SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. He lived in Halifax Co., NC when he enlisted in the NC Militia. He mar. Lydia Daniel in 1776 in Halifax Co. He later moved to Wake Co., NC and then to Davidson Co., NC, where he died 29 Apr 1839. His widow died 15 Dec 1842. Ch named: Henry Sanders (27 Dec 1777; in 1853 was resident of Forsyth Co., NC), Martha ("Patsy") Sanders who mar Solomon Proctor and in 1853 she was a widow living in Forsyth Co., NC), Robert Sanders (who had lived at one time in Tn. but had not been heard from as of 1853 in 15 yrs; had 2 ch), Britton Sanders (never married; deceased (?) in 1853) and Nancy Sanders (who mar Wiatt Michel or Mitchel and in 1853 she was aged about 50 and was a widow living in Forsyth Co.). The son Henry Sanders saw military service in the French Disturbance of 1800.

REUBEN SANDERS
Virginia Militia. Born about 1764 in Caroline Co., Va. and lived there when he enlisted in the Va. Militia. He applied for a pension in 1832, while living in Shelby Co., Ky.

RICHARD SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. B. in 1756 in Va. and raised on the Dan River in Caswell Co., NC, where he lived when he enlisted in the NC Militia. He served under Colonel Adam Sanders. He enlisted as a private and was later promoted to Captain. He lived in Wilson Co., Tn. In 1832 when he applied for a pension. He died 12 Feb 1834. Received $335.00 Annual Allowance; $837.50 amount received; 26 Jul 1833, pension started, age 77 while living in Wilson Co., Tn. (1835 Tn Pension Roll)

ROGER PARKER SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. Roger enlisted in the First Regiment of SC Militia as a Captain on 17 Jun 1775. He resigned 8 Oct 1778.

SAMUEL SANDERS
New Hampshire Militia and Continental Service. He applied for a veteran's penion 23 Apr 1818 when living at Grafton Co., NH. In 1820, he was aged 56 and a resident of Graham, NH, with wife Lydia, aged 53, and dau Lydia, 14. He and Lydia mar 13 Mar 1778. He died 27 Sep 1820. His widow applied for a pension 31 Aug 1838 at Grantham, Sullivan Co., NH, aged 71.

SAMUEL SANDERS
Massachusetts Militia. Samuel was born 1761 at Fitchburg, Ma. He lived at Westminster, Ma. when he enlisted in the Militia. In 1795, he moved to Jaffrey, Cheshire Co., NH. He applied for a veteran's pension there 3 Nov 1835.

SOLOMON SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. He lived in Craven Co., NC when he enlisted in the NC Militia. received a BLW. On 29 Aug 1826, he applied for a veteran's pension while he lived in Franklin Co., Tn. with wife Mary, age about 54 and ch living at home included Nancy Sanders age 18, Sally Sanders age 16, Jacob Sanders age 12 and Jordan Sanders, 11. His widow applied for a pension 16 Dec 1852 while living in Grundy Co., Tn. at age 83. They were mar May 1791 in Powel's Velley, in what became Campbell Co., Tn. In 1791, they moved to Ky. and in 1807, moved to Grundy Co, Tn. Solomon died there 29 Nov 1837. His widow applied for a BLW there 13 Mar 1855, at age 100.

SOLOMON SANDERS
Massachusetts Militia. Solomon was born 18 Jan 1760 at Harvard, Ma. and lived there when he enlisted in the Militia. In 1787, he moved to Mason, NH, then to Chester, Vt. for 3 yrs, then to Brookline, NH where he was living when he applied for a veteran's pension in Sep 1832.

THOMAS SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. Applied for a pension in 1822 while living in Hertford Co., NC, aged 59. His wife was age 60; an orphan named Boling Boon Hagins, age 8, lived with them.

THOMAS SANDERS Sr.
South Carolina Militia. Born 14 Dec 1757 in Loudoun Co., Va. He lived in Chester Co., SC when he enlisted in the SC Militia in 1780 and served under Captain Thomas Robbins, Cols. Hopkins and Taylor and Gen. Sumter. He participated in the Battle of Juniper Springs and a skirmish near Orangeburg. In 1824, he moved to Union Dist., SC where he applied for a pension in 1832. He died 6 Nov 1836. His son Thomas Jr. was executor of his estate.

THOMAS SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. Thomas served 168 days in the SC Militia in 1781.

THOMAS SANDERS
Connecticut Militia. Thomas was born 11 Dec 1758 at Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Ct. and live there when he enlisted in the Militia. He still lived there when he applied for a veteran's pension 2 Aug 1832.

WAIT SAUNDERS
Rhode Island Militia. Received BLW. Wife, Mary. Also listed as Sanders.

WILLIAM SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. Born Caroline Co., Va. When he enlisted, he was living in that part of Bute Co., NC that later became part of Warren Co. When he applied for a pension in 1832, he stated he had lived in the same area for 60 years.

WILLIAM SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. B. 20 Feb 1760 in Beaufort Co., NC. Served as Lieutenant and later as Captain in the 4th North Carolina Regiment of Militia. Mar Patience Benthal and they had at least 3 ch. He later moved to Christian Co., Ky. and then to Jefferson Co., AL. He and his wife Patience became founding members of the Rock Creek Baptist Church there in 1820. He died 15 Mar 1847. They are buried at the Rock Creek Church Cemetery.

WILLIAM SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. B. Carteret Co., NC. He later moved to Williamson Co., Tn., then to Christian Co., Ky., then to Jefferson Co., Ala. by 1820. He and his wife Patience became founding members of the Rock Creek Baptist Church in Jefferson Co. on 25 May 1820. He was living there when he applied for a pension 7 May 1833 at age 73. Son mentioned: David Sanders.

WILLIAM SANDERS
North Carolina Militia. He lived in Nash Co., NC when he enlisted in the NC Militia. Later moved to Mercer Co., Ky., where he applied for a pension 4 Jan 1836 at age 82.

WILLIAM SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. William serve in the SC Militia in 1779, 1780. In 1781, he served under Capt. Craig.

WILLIAM SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. William served as a Captain during 1775 in the Round O Company of the Colleton County Regiment of SC Militia.

WILLIAM SANDERS
South Carolina Militia. Served in the Third Regiment of SC Militia under Capt. John Hennington during 1779.

WILLIAM SAUNDERS
South Carolina Militia. Served 28 days as a horseman under Capt. Vardry McBee and 53 days under Capt. John Mapp and Col. Roebuck.

WILLIAM SAUNDERS
Virginia State Navy. Served as a Captain in the Virginia State Navy. His brother Cely Saunders also served as a Captain in the Navy during the War.

WILLIAM SANDERS
Pennsylvania Militia. William was born 1746 near Philadelphia, Pa. and lived there when he enlisted in the Pa. Militia. In 1831, he moved to Columbiana Co., Oh. where he applied for a veteran's pension, 29 Apr 1833. He died 9 Mar 1839 in Oh., leaving a widow who was living in Pennsylvania in 1839. His son John Saunders was living in Winchester, In. and was referred to as one of his sons. Pension records also refer to Jacob H. Sanders of Columbiana Co.

WILLIAM SANDERS
Pennsylvania Militia. William lived in Blockley Township, Philadelphia Co., Pa. when he enlisted in the Pa. Militia. He received a BLW for his military service. He mar Mary Hall 9 Oct 1809 in Blockley. He applied there for a veteran's pension 11 Jan 1834 at age 88. He died thee9 May 1848. His widow applied for a pension 15 Jun 1853 when living in Bucks Co., Pa. at age 80. She applied for a BLW 15 Jun 1855 and again gave her age as 80.

ZACHARIAH SANDERS Sr.
Virginia Militia. B. 1759 in Mecklenburg Co., Va. He mar. Sarah ("Sally") Kitchen 24 Dec., 1795 in Buckingham Co., Va. They moved to Wayne Co., Ky., about 1798 or 1799, where he applied for a pension in 1832. He died there 10 Sep., 1842. His wid. applied for a BLWin 1855 at age 77. Ch included a son (not named) b. 1798, Polly, Elizabeth, Josephine, George Washington, Peter Muhlenberg, Alvin, William, Eliza, Ciata, Zachariah Ujr. And Hiram. Wid. stated in 1848 that Alvin, William, ElizabethZachariah Jr. and Muhlenbert were dead and the rest lived in Wayne Co. except Francis who lived in Tn., Josephine, living in IL. and Hiram, who had served in the Mexican War and not returned home.
