Third studio album from rambunctious Japanese hardcore group.

Melt Banana has been near the top of a stellar hardcore scene in Japan since the mid-90s, but have steadily gained international acclaim through constant touring. They made a splash in America in 1995 opening for Mr. Bungle, and have since filled the noisy void left by Boredoms when that band went Krautrock.

Banana is fronted by Yasuko, who can be said to have one of the most distinctive vocal styles in all of rock. Actually, it's more of a shriek (or maybe a yelp), and you can usually tell an MB tune in the first couple of seconds just by her outbursts. Equally responisble for the band's rep is guitarist Agata. Add his hyperactive-nuclear-radar-scream style to the band's divebomb rhythm theory, and you get something akin to warp 9.5.

Representative tracks

Introduction for Charlie: It starts with a low buzz, but wastes little time ushering in a buzzsaw guitar-as-turntable scratchfest. Then, the hardcore drums, shriek-flight, and it's 500 laps until the end. But wait, there's more! What distinguishes the music on Charlie from previous CDs is the use of electronics, and midway through this tune, the industrial effects hit. Future shock? Maybe. Cool band? Damn straight.

Live-in-the-studio album from much traveled Japanese band.

Whatever you say about Melt Banana, there's not a lot of doubt about their live show. It's a trip, and if you see them once, you're not likely to forget it. Truthfully, the band sounds very similar live to their studio records, except for that old intangible called 'energy'. This record is good document of their show, but do yourself a favor and check them out in person.

MxBx 1998 was released on John Zorn's Tzadik label, and recorded in New York City during the band's Charlie tour. Along with Ruins, Boredoms, Otomo Yoshide, and a few others, Melt Banana seem to best represent the 'New Japan' moniker Zorn attaches to this release. They are currently one of the most popular bands in the Tokyo live house circuit, and will probably only just get better.

Representative tracks

Iguana in Trouble/Tapir's Flown Away: Begins as a subdued, odd meter instrumental. MB, unlike a great many other hardcore, etc. bands, do seem to have more than a passing interest in instrumental textures. Most of the time, even if you have no idea what's going on in Yasuko's head, there's plenty to hear in that rhythm section. The instrumental leads into the Charlie jam, part Dick Dale, part Mr. Bungle insane-i-core, almost totally unlike anything else. Catch them while you can.

Surfin' USA: Yes, this is really "Surfin' USA", so I guess that means that these guys aren't totally serious about everything. Suffice to say, the energy is up, and Yasuko's vocals are a tad less harmonious than the old Beach Boys version, but if this band isn't about shaking up the norm, I don't know who is.
