Welcome to Xian


You are now in Xian (pronounced she-ann) this was the ancient capital of China and once the gateway to the Silk Road. Xian was one of the greatest cities of the world, rivaling Rome and Constantinople. You have the coice of two different challenges here, choose one and when you have completed it, click on the plane at the bottom of the page to fly to your next destination.

The picture on the left is of two Terracotta warriors who guard the tomb of Emperor Qin Shihuang. There are 6000 life size terracotta figures representing an army of warriors and their horses in battle formation.

CHALLENGE : The terracotta warriors were modelled from clay. Make a model figure in either plastecine or in modelling clay (if you have some). Let us know by e-mail what figure you have made.

This is the Big Goose Pagoda, originally built in 652 AD, it is an impressive fortress of wood and brick which is 64 metres tall. It was built to house Buddhist scripures brought back from India by a travelling monk Xuan Zang. He then translated them into chinese which took 1335 volumes.

CHALLENGE : How tall can you build a tower ? Construct a newspaper tower, measure its height and E-mail us with the height.
