Charles Houk enlisted in Company I on August 5, 1862, at Plymouth. He was 21. Charles was mustered into service on August 14, 1862. He may have been related to Henry L. Houk, also of Company I, and therefore by extension to Dr. Smith as well.
Not many details of Charles' service are known. He was transferred to the Invalid Corps for disability on July 1, 1863. He served the remainder of the war with the Invalid Corps, which was later renamed the Veteran Reserve Corps. Charles was discharged at Washington D. C. on June 26, 1865, from the 243rd Company, First Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps.
