Fernando W. Moon

Fernando Moon and his brother Oliver Moon were born in Van Buren, Michigan. In the summer of 1862, they were both farmers in Belleville. Fernando enlisted in Company D on August 8, 1862, and was mustered into service on August 13, 1862. He was 21 years old.

At present, the details of his service are not known. He was discharged for disability on Detroit, Michigan on January 13, 1864. A likely scenario would be that Fernando suffered from severe or chronically debilitating illness and was sent to Detroit, possibly Harper Hospital. Eventually the doctors realized he would not sufficiently recover to resume duty in the field, and he was discharged from the service.

Despite this, however, Fernando lived a long life. He attended "Michigan Day at Gettysburg" in June 1889, although his brother did not. As late as about 1915 he was still a resident of Belleville, Michigan.
