Oliver Moon and His brother Fernando Moon
were born in Van Buren, Michigan. In the summer of 1862, they
were both farmers in Belleville. Oliver Moon enlisted in Company
D on August 11, 1862, and was mustered into service on August
13, 1862.
On December 16, in the Regiment's first action, Fredericksburg, Oliver was captured by the rebel forces. He was taken to the infamous Libby prison and confined there until January 8, 1863.
He was exchanged and returned to duty with the Regiment. He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The wound was probably quite severe; He was transferred to the Invalid Corps on March 31, 1864. Oliver was promoted to Corporal of Company H, Second Regiment of the newly renamed the Veterans Reserve Corps. He was discharged at Detroit on July 6, 1865.
