James Armstrong was the brother of William and Thomas Armstrong. He enlisted as a recruit for the 24th Michigan on March 28, 1865 at Lenox for 1 year At the time of his enlistment James Armstrong was 43. He was mustered into service on the same day.
By this time, the 24th Michigan was stationed at Camp Butler near Springfield, Illinois. At this point in the war new recruits for the 24th were not actually assigned to a company. The common opinion was that the Regiment would soon be discharged. Many of the veterans looked down upon these Springfield recruits. They believed that the "fresh fish" had enlisted only after the bounties had become large and the danger small.
James saw no combat, although along with the rest of the Regiment he participated in Lincoln's funeral.
The conditions at Camp Butler were not healthy; many men, became ill and more than 40 died (mostly new recruits). James was admitted to Harper Hospital, June 8, 1865. He was discharged at Detroit, Michigan on June 26, 1865.
James Armstrong died on July, 31, 1892. The State Adjutant General indicates that he was originally buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw Michigan. He is now rests in Newburgh Cemetery, Livonia, Michigan, however.
