William A. Armstrong was the brother of Thomas and James Armstrong. The State Adjutant General indicates that he was working as a laborer in Ash prior to his enlistment. William enlisted in Company G on August 12, 1862 at Detroit. Why he did enlist in the same company as his brother remains unknown. William was mustered into service on August 13, 1862. He was 19 years old.
Little is known of his military service. He was with the Regiment at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. He was severely wounded in the arm, which was eventually amputated. After a lengthy period of hospitalization, he was discharged for disability on November 26, 1863. He returned to Michigan and is buried in Romulus Cemetery, Romulus, Michigan.
