William Smith was born in England. During the summer of 1862 he was working as sailor on the Great Lakes.. He was 24. He enlisted on August 5, 1862, and was probably mustered into service with the rest of his company on August 13, 1862. For some reason the State Adjutant General indicated that he was mustered into service on September 13, 1862, probably as the result of a transcription error.
William fell victim to one of the diseases that was common during the first few months of a new regiment's service. He was discharged for disability on December 6 (also given as December 25), 1862 at Washington D. C.
Strangely, since there was another William Smith in Company B, This William was officially listed in all company documents as "William Smith 1st. "
