According to O. B. Curtis (p. 322), Augustus Ziegler and his older brother William were both born in Detroit. They enlisted in company A, 24th Michigan Infantry, William on August 4, 1862 and Augustus on August 13, 1862 at Detroit. William was 23. Although 5 years older than his brother, William enlisted as a private. William's pre-war occupation was tinsmith.
Not much is currently know about William Ziegler's service. He was appointed to the color guard and promoted to corporal. While performing this hazardous duty William Ziegler was killed in action at Gettysburg Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863.
Following the battle, Augustus Ziegler spared no effort to
try to find out what became of his older brother, but to
no avail. Since William's body could not be identified and his
grave was not marked, and he probably lies in the National Cemetery
beneath a stone marked "UNKNOWN".
