Where the gutted Annex Once Stood

Our walk westward all the way down to the end of the first floor hallway in the central building terminates abruptly at an opening which revealed this sight: the torn-open east side of the West Wing, separated from us by a vast, crater-like lot. The scene nearly resembled a bomb target. Pictures of the annex, with the collapsed roof years prior to its demolition, appear in the DAMC's White House Hotel Virtual Tour. This section was actually the most recent addition to the White House resort complex, being built to join the other exsisting wings in the 1940's after the original White buildings were removed. Ironically, this part of the hotel housed the last operating business on this site, some nightclub called Amelia's which is told to have operated right up through the 1980's while the rest of the complex was already closed down. More information of the resort's history will be added to the Virtual Tour as it becomes available.
The hazardous activity in this section restricted us from going on to explore the West Wing or the actual demolition area, so we turned about and headed east towards the other end of the resort, the section we've called the East Wing Tower building. Let's go.

This is outside detail of the front fascade where the central wing meets the gutted out annex which was demolished due to its collapse. As noted earlier, pains were taken to save the front of the building (probably the only part of the annex not constructed from mostly wood) in order to preserve the integrity of the resort's historical appearance. One might contrast the wooden panes of the windows (now removed) in the central wing to the jalousy type windows (added in the 1950's) remaining in the now-gutted wing.
