Ahhhh... good old D&D what else needs to be said... PLENTY.
Well my group of friends that I play D&D with have played for a long time and know just about all the ins and outs of the rules. WE have tried things from mana point systems to weird kits and from what I have heard and seen just about every combination of race/class out there.
For Example:
A half-elf Ranger/Cleric/Mage,
A minotaur Fighter/Mage
Even a wood-elf Samurai
The game I am currently running is as follows:
The group is in a land called Halonia (smile) and have become caught up in a rescue effort to rescue the princess from a mysterious stranger who has taken her. (Yeah I know the OLDEST quest in the book.)
To accomplish this we have the following characters:
A half elf Ranger/Cleric/Mage (worshiper of Isis)
A dwarf Champion(FTR/CLE)(worshiper of Clangeddin Silverbeard)
A wood elf Samurai beholden to the dwarf fighter cleric above (Mammal Duthal)
A half elf Blade(a type of bard)/Fighter
A minotaur Fighter/Mage
and if he ever manages to show up A human Smuggler(a type of thief)
Through perhaps being to generous (Oh yeah now there's a fault in a DM *Smile*) Almost all of them, except the Ranger/Cleric/Mage, ended up with 18/% strength or more.
Anyway they are currently in a tower rumored to have belonged to the Drow ages ago. The Drow of this world have been gone from the surface long enough for the Elves to begin to think they are a legend. The party really doesn't know the full extent of what is going on yet, but I am hoping to feed it to them a bit at a time until they know the story.
Some facts for above that you may wish to know about:
Mammal Duthal: Dwarven God of Adventure
Yes and you can guess what he requires of his followers: GO ON ADVENTURE.
other than this there is only one other thing they must do: set up an adventurer's
weighstation. That's a place where adventurer's can get food, shelter, etc. for
either a donation or replacing what is taken. Ooh, really hard work for the extras
this god gives. He gives his worshipers Free action at level 1, haste no aging at level 7,
and something else. While they have no ability to turn undead, they get bonuses
to hit them.
Isis: Egyptian Goddess of Magic and Knowledge
This is a good goddess to take. Her followers are automatically made mage/clerics
regardless of race. This is one of the few ways to make a Human a multiclassed
character.
By far, the game I am playing in currently is one of the strangest ones I am in. We have all taken up the role of a super hero in comic books and are doing it in D&D.
We have:
A Halfling Beastrider(fighter)/Thief who rides a giant bat, and not surprisingly he is Batman.(my character)
A Saurial Paladin with markings of the old red, white, and blue. Captain America
A Thri-Kreen Ranger who is is a True Lycanthrope. She is Wolfsbane.
A Gnome psionicist/thief who floats through walls to steal stuff. She calls herself Shadow Cat.
A Voadkyn(Wood Giant) female who is trying to be Hawkeye.
It is interesting trying to play super heroes in a D&D setting. We had to improvise things. For instance, for Batman's rope launcher we have a hand crossbow with special arrows that bite into stone to hold it like a grappling hook.
