More on Kingsville, Texas

or Where the heck am I, anyway?

Kingsville, Texas...hmm not much to say here. About all they have here is a University and a Naval Base. Kingsville is located approximately 15 miles inland along the Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It is approximately 130 miles north of the border with Mexico. It is smack down in the middle of the King Ranch, one of the largest ranches in the world. The town has a historic main street that has older buildings with newer businesses in them. The town is about 100 years old or so and has a population of about 30,000 people. I have lived here, well in the immediate area, since I was in the sixth grade. It is a pretty boring town. There is not much to do here.

The University is well known for its engineering degrees but not much else. It is also known for its champion football team which most of the time makes the playoffs. It has about 5-6,000 students in many majors. The University used to be known as a teacher college, and a lot of the public school teachers around here are alumni.

The Naval Base is NAVAL AIR STATION KINGSVILLE. It houses one of the Navy's flight trainer units and trains pilots for the Navy's fighters and helicopters. Many civilians in the town work there. The base has managed to stay off the base closure list despite being reviewed nearly every time the list is put up for review. The people of the town are quite happy that this is the case.
