time and again

Janeway and Paris are thrown back in time.
Kes' psychic powers begin to emerge.
    Starring: Janeway, Paris.
    Co-Starring: Kes.

Type of Episode: Time Travel. Social Commentry. Dream/Never Happened.
How Does The Trouble Start?: While an away team investigates a disaster, Tom Paris is snatched back in time.
Impressive Characters: Paris is impressive in this one. Especially at the end when he saves the kid's life. He also manages to bond with the kid, and this isn't a particularly nice kid either!
Janeway makes a great captain in this story.
Impressive Acting: Jennifer Lien has great scene early on, as Kes copes with the grief of what she's seen. But, because of where it is in the episode, and what it's about, the scene fails to have much impact. If Kes was doing this at the climax of some story, about something which mattered to the viewer, it would really blow you away.
Conflict: Janeway and Paris have a mild debate about the Prime Directive.
Tuvok and Chakotay, however, have a strong disagreement over where the captain is likely to go.
Teamwork: Torres and Kim work on the mechanics of getting the missing duo back. Torres, in particular, earning praise from Chakotay. Then Kes helps out by sensing the captain.
Continuity: This is the one where the Doctor is told about the ship's situation (except, of course, that none of that ever happened!!). As usual, the Doctor's brief scene is an absolute delight.
Best Scene: Paris talks with the kid on the steps. A nice scene. Not only because it emphasises the oncoming destruction of the planet, but (from a writing viewpoint) it quickly fleshes the character of the kid out. He ceases to be "the brat" from that point on. So, it's easy to believe that Paris would risk his life for him outside the plant.
Best Line: "Seems I've found myself on the voyage of the damned." The Doctor, upon being told of the ship's current predicament. (Indeed, every line uttered by The Doctor in this short, wonderful scene is worthy of being called "Best Line.")
Three Best Things About This Episode:
  • Paris is in good form. Charming and heroic.
  • Paris and Janeway make an appealing team. Especially in their first confrontation with the kid. Janeway's reaction as Paris scares the kid is great.
  • Janeway is dynamic and impressive in the finale. Indeed, she's comes across generally as a take charge, hands-on captain.
Three Worst Things About This Episode:
  • None of it happened. Arggh!! I hate those episodes. Still, this has to be the best one I've seen.
  • Um...

Comments: Voyager's third outing. And another good one. Nifty little take on the time-travel idea. And effective parallels with modern day earth and nuclear energy. Nicholas Surovy (Stark) is good, even though he has very little to do. The episode belongs to Janeway and Paris, who make a great team. Visually, the episode looks great. Nice contrast between the planet "before" and "after."

    GRADE: A
