Neelix is attacked and his lungs are removed.

(!!! Wow! There's one plot we haven't seen before!)

    Starring: The Doctor, Janeway; Neelix.
    Co-Starring: Kes.
    Cameo: Chakotay.

Type of Episode: Medical Crisis. Alien Enemy. Horror.
How Does The Trouble Start? Neelix wanders off.
Impressive Characters: The Doctor is brilliant in this one. Truly practicing medicine out on the edge, ahead of all that's ever been done before. Like Paris in Threshold, it's ironic that he's cut off from life in the Alpha Quadrant where his achievements would be recognised.
Impressive Acting: Kate Mulgrew is superb in the transporter room scene.
Conflict: Neelix repeatedly disobeys Chakotay's orders at the start of the episode. Which is what gets him into trouble. Strangely enough, no mention is made of his disobediance after the fact. But you have to wonder if this has anything to do with Neelix being shunted to the sidelines, mission-wise, from here on in.
Teamwork: It is Chakotay's suggestion that finds the Vidiian ship. Without his idea, the Vidiians might never have come over to save Neelix, and The Doctor might still be there, scratching his eyebrows...
Continuity: Kes is signed up for medical training at the end of this episode, following Tom's disasterous first outing as a nurse.
    The Vidiian's are introduced.
    Neelix's kitchen is created.
Best Scene: The Doctor Scratches Neelix. This is a wonderful scene, it begins by making you laugh, and pulls you in until it almost has you crying. This happens swiftly and effortlessly. What starts as a quick laugh from any sitcom finishes by being a scene as touching as any on St. Elsewhere.
Best Line: "Any aggressive actions against this ship, or it's crew, will be met by the deadliest force. Do you understand?" Janeway to Vidiians.
Three Things I Really Liked About This Episode:
  • -Seeing The Doctor in action.
  • -Seeing Janeway's tough side.
  • -Hearing nice music throughout (Dennis McCarthy at work).
Three Things I Really Didn't Like About This Episode:
  • -Um, gimme time...

Miscellaneous Comments: A good horror story with a novel and interesting villain. The episode boasts action (in the caves), touching character drama (Neelix), compelling character development (The Doctor), humour and a dynamic captain.

What's scary, of course, is that the Vidiian's sound so cultured and refined. The rationalise everything they do, and rationalise it very well too.

In this episode we see the many hats worn by Neelix. Cook, guide, jester, jealous boyfriend, over-eager crew-member and self-pitying matyr. That's a lot of material. Especially considering that he isn't even on screen most of the time.

This is the first time we see all three pivotal males in Kes' life bonding with her in the same episode. Neelix and Kes are evidently a couple of some sort (that has been established). Paris offers to comfort the girl if she needs it, and he is obviously a friend. And The Doctor has grown to like her so much that he maneuvers her into sickbay as his new assistant. This is only to be expected, really, since Kes is the only one we've seen talking to him (back in Parallax). Neelix, Paris and The Doctor. These three gentlemen are really going to miss Kes when her life is over (2002, or thereabouts). So, too, will Tuvok who becomes her spiritual guide in later episodes.

This episode like every one before it, pauses at every turn to add to the characters. The scene on the bridge, with Tuvok and Janeway discussing her predictability, is a wonderful example of this. Kes boosting The Doctor's confidence is another. Voyager positively reeks of being a crafted show. A carefully thought-out, and realised, series. That's why it beats just about every other show I've ever seen.

    GRADE: A
