What Happens?Voyager is trapped in a large Nebula Cloud Creature.
    Starring: Janeway.
    Featuring:
    Supporting:
Impressive Characters: Kes, whose attitude to life can be summed up as: "If I were captain, I'd open every crack in the universe and peek inside, just like Captain Janeway does does." It's a wonderful sentiment, wonderfully expressed.
Neelix, too, impresses when he has a change of heart and says: "I had a choice to either come up here and say 'I told you so,' or, to try and do something constructive in my own humble manner."
    Impressive Acting:
Conflict:Neelix is very much against Janewya's way of doing things, but (in a wonderfully writen sequnce of scenes) changes his mind and comes around to her way of thinking.
Teamwork: B'Elanna's idea saves the Nebula Cloud (with prompting from The Doctor). Chakotay's idea's gets them back out. The Doctor tells them what to do. And Janeway comes up with a diversion for the Nebula Cloud.
How Does The Trouble Start?:Janeway is curious about the Nebula.
Who Saves The Day?B'Elanna, Chakotay, The Doctor and Janeway.
Type of Episode: Ship In Peril. Space Anomaly.
    Continuity:Neelix becomes morale officer.
When called to the bridge, Janeway does a nice job of reading Tuvok's mind about what he intends to do.
    The Holodeck bar first appears.
Best Scene:The introduction of the holodeck bar, late one night, is a wonderful scene.
Janeway's search for her animal guide is another lovely scene.
Best Line:"Let's see, you ran your ship through it, fired phasers at it, and blew a hole in it with a photon torpedo. I'd say it's a pretty good chance that you did some fairly significant dam--" The Doctor's unwelcome summation of events so far.
Three Things I Really Liked About This Episode:
  • -The character development.
  • -The introduction of the bar.
  • -The teamwork.
Three Things I Really Didn't Like About This Episode:

    Miscellaneous Comments:A magical, magical episode.
"We hurt it, and we have to help it recover." The message here is, if you make a mistake, you turn around and fix it. Put things right. This is an essential part of what makes Star Trek: Voyager so appealing to me. If Captain Sheridan (over on Babylon 5) attempted a gesture of this kind, he would be relieved of command very qucikly. That's because over there, they have a much darker, more cynical universe. One of the things I like best about Star Trek Voyager is that it's an environment where a captain can make this kind of gesture and her crew will respect it.
And some of the things I love most about Star Trek Voyager are present in this episode. Janeways' attitude to exploration, the writers attention to characterization, and the belief that what wrong you do you immedicately set out to put right.
Janeway's early musings, as the episode begins, come across as honest and genuine. The scene with Tom and Harry is believably strained, as opposed to TV-strained. The final moments of the episode are all the more wonderful because of that start. Janeway is, by stories end, so much becoming one-of-them, that you walk away from this episode with glow of satisfaction.
Voyager is the only show doing all the stories that I want to see. Here is a story about a character who wants to find the right way to belong with her peer group. I respond to that thread every bit as forcefully as I do when I see it on My So-Called Life.
Here is a story about going back over your mistakes. The turnabout Neelix makes is a microcosm for the journey of the ship.
Janeway's mistake was harming the Nebula Cloud Creature.
Neelix's mistake was pulling against the crew.
Harry's mistake was in not reaching out to the captain.
All three characters set out to correct their earlier mistake. And all three succeed.

    GRADE: A+
