Neelix meets the man who killed his family
    Starring: Neelix
    Co-Starring:-
    Featuring: Kes, Janeway
Cameo: Tuvok, Paris, Torres, The Doctor, Chakotay, Kim

Type of Episode: Medical Crisis. Allegory.
Pre-Credits Scene: Neelix and Tuvok playing pool, while Paris watches and advises. An enjoyable little scene (probably the last on in the episode) and one with nice foreshadowing of what will follow, when Neelix casually criticises a certain tactic as being "cowardly." Nice.
How Does The Trouble Start?: The ship receives a message for Neelix.
    Impressive Characters: None.
    Impressive Acting: None.
Conflict: Neelix lets his emotions cloud his judgement. And clashes with Kes and Janeway.
    Teamwork: None.
Continuity: The Doctor can now turn himself off if he chooses.
    The Holodeck bar appears again.
    Best Scene: Nothing stands out.
Best Line: "We've heard this from you before, Doctor. You're beginning to lose credibility." Janeway to Jetrel in the transporter room.
    Worst Scene: The dream sequence.
Who Saves The Day? Doesn't really apply to this episode.
Closing Scene: The Death of Jetrel.

Three Things I Really Didn't Like About This Episode:
  • -Didn't really like Phillip's acting style. Especially in the early scenes. Not subtle enough for my tastes.
  • -The dream sequence.
  • -Here's a story about Voyager wandering off course. I don't like that. And doesn't it stretch credibility that they were fairly near to Neelix's home planet. And how far, exactly, did this little excurion set them back? Why not write about that for a few scenes, since is one of the things that makes Star Trek Voyager unique?

Miscellaneous Comments:So, Neelix is Japanese, huh?

Not an enjoyable episode from my point of view. Everything is much too OTT for any of it to work.

The first scene between Jetrel and Neelix (with Janeway in tow) stands out as being much gentler and more convincing than almost any other scene in the episode. It seems like everthing else was being pitched at 110% and I was left cringing.

It this episode was meant to make me like Neelix, it failed. In fact, as it went on, I had less and less sympathy for him. And I certainly didn't have much sympathy for Jetrel. So, what I was left with was two characters I didn't like very much being nasty to one another for an hour. Not my idea of Star Trek Voyager.

And, I'm still not convinced about the relationship between Neelix and Kes. When he confesses his (apparent) cowardice, her immediate forgiveness and justification of his actions left me with a very bad impression of their relationship. She as naive, innocent child: He as shrewd manipulator. Since Neelix has been written so many times as a con-man figure, it is unfortunate that he is romatically paired with the character least likely to see through him. The very character liable to be fooled by him. Not a nice relationship.

All in all, this stands out as one of the very weakest Voyager outings. An unwelcome patch of desert in a landscape of oasis after oasis.
