basics, part two

  • 2V23

    Suder gets the ship back.
    Starring: (Suder)
    Co-Starring:The Doctor, Paris
    Featuring: Chakotay
    Cameo: (Hogan)

    Type of Episode: Action-Adventure.
How Does The Trouble Start?: In part one.
Impressive Characters: Chakotay is in top form in this one, leaping over lava to perform rescues and such-like.
Impressive Acting:Brad Douriff as Suder is excellent.
Conflict: Teamwork all round. Neelix is overly anxious on the planet, but shoves it aside.
Teamwork: The Doctor and Suder, in particular, with Tom Paris.
Continuity: Lots, really, it being a "Part Two" and all.
Of note, though, must be the sudden brutal death of Hogan (he, who so forcefully voiced an opinion that Janeway and Chakotay should be saved, in Resolutions).
Best Scene: Death of Suder. Very surprising, and very moving.
    Best Line:
Who Saves The Day? Tom Paris, The Doctor (and Suder, the real hero of the episode).
Three Things I Really Liked About This Episode:
  • -Chakoay leaping to the rescue. The sort of dynamic action, Robert Beltran enjoys doing.

Three Things I Really Didn't Like About This Episode:
  • -It's a pity Suder died. His death, of course, makes the story something really special, but... it's a pity Suder died.

Miscellaneous Comments: This is where the story comes alive.

An episode with everything. A busy Star Trek Voyager.

Suder's death was tragic. But poetic and moving. After Meld (which I was disappointed by) I had no great fondness for the character. Because of Basics, I'll always consider him a favourite character of mine.

His demise was a shame for Tuvok, though. Tuvok has still to take off as a character. His conversations with Suder promised to make him much more interesting to me. Alas it was not to be.

Not that I disapprove of Suder's end. In fact I praise it. Best of Both Worlds is a classic because it is very much the story of one man's struggle with himself. Basics is likewise the story of one man. He goes through a lot before it ends and his final peace is wonderfully poetic.

    GRADE: A+
