This is a superb episode. When (20 minutes into the episode) a injured Paris ordered Kim to leave him behind I was touched. I felt it was noble and I admired the Character of Tom Paris. But I wondered about the scene. If I was writing this, I thought, is that what I'd write. Should a writer not put himself completely into the situation and strive to write with honesty, if he really wants to reach his audience.
Twenty minutes later, Paris was pleading with Kim not to leave him behind. This time, I really was touched. I felt this was honest and I admired the writer. And, not for the first time, I had proof of why I see Star Trek: Voyager as the best show being made today.
Does this episode set the tone for Year Three, I wonder. If so, we are in for an adult ride. This was strong stuff. As the poor schlub who got his throat cut will testify!
I loved the final scene. Paris and Kim really are best friends, aren't they? But I loved the episode the episode for more than the final scene. This episode, even more than Resolutions, made me admire Harry Kim. Before this episode, I had five favourite characters: Janeway, The Doctor, Chakotay, Paris and Torres. With this installment, I added Kim to the list. Which, at time of writing, leaves only Kes, Tuvok and Neelix to be developed. In all honesty I'm as fond of Carey and Hogan (and pre-defection Seska) as I am of these three!
